BACKBLOCK ROADS
NO GOVERNMENT AID COMPLAINT OF FARMERS WAITEMATA COUNTY POSITION The fact that no now money had been provided under the Parliamentary Estimates to subsidise the metalling of backblock roads was commented upon at a meeting of the Waitemata County Council yesterday. Other loan advances which -had been promised by tho State Advances Corporation had not materialised, but it was expected that- further advice would be received shortly. "Many letters have been received from backblock farmers," said tho chairman, ■ Mr. S. Phillips, "but relief is impossible as the council can only work according to its budget. In many cases they havo written direct to tho Minister, who in turn has written to tho county engineer asking that relief bo given. Tho ratepayers, no doubt, havo in mind tho five-year plan inaugurated by the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. B. Sent pie, for tho metalling of farmers' roads within a prescribed period." Mr. Phillips added that it was strange that money had been authorised lor tho scenic drive through the Waitakeres, which was purely a road for tourists, and yet no funds were available for helping to metal backblock roads.
