AMERICAN BASKETBALL
AUCKLAND LEAGUE CONTESTS Considerable interest was shown in the matches of the Auckland American Basketball League, held in the Y.M.C.A. last evening. Two very even and keen contests revealed a high standard of play and showed that the players concerned had a sound knowledge of the game. The match between Seagulls and Y.M.C.A. Gymnasium saw tho scores evened on three occasions, and it was only in the final minute that the former gained the decision with a penalty basket. Farmers' Trading and Hybrids also staged an exciting contest in which the defence of both teams was sound. The half-time score was even and, with no score registered in the third quarter and most of the last quarter gone, the match looked like boing a draw, but Farmers' Trading broke away to score the winning basket just on time. Following were the results:— Seagulls, 8 (M. Fraser -1, R. Bush 2, V. Smith 2), beat Y.M.C.A. Gymnasium, 7 (Middleton (5, Potter 1); Farmers' Trading, 7 (Tang.ve 3, Gladding 2, Walker 2), beat Hybrids, 0 (Gillespio 2, Bates 2, Coates 2): Newzico, 10 (Brackenrig -1, Hawkcn 4, Leyland 2), beat Watts' Sports Depot, 8 (Roughton 4, Watts 2, Clark 2); Auckland Gymnasium, 18 (Allisqn 8, Martin 6, Linden 2, Paul 2), beat J.C.L., 7 (Rawles 4, Robson 2, Coleman 1); Mormons, 37 (Molloy 19, Wallace 8, Montague 6, Aldons 2, Hapl 2), beat Y.M.C.A. Hockey, 3 (Herbert 3); Saints won from Y.M.C.A. Soccer by default; Nomads won from Vulcan by default.
