RUGBY FOOTBALL

AUCKLAND'S YICTOBY TARANAKI CONGRATULATIONS ASSISTANCE FOR WAIUKU REPRESENTATIVE REFEREES The chairman, Mr. Arthur Baker, said at the Auckland Rugby Union's meeting last night .that he had been asked by the Hon. J. McLeod, M.L.C 1 ., president of the Taranaki Rugby Union, to compliment the union on the fine showing of the representative team against ( Taranaki last Saturday.

Mr. Baker said that he would like to add to this his own congratulations. The match had been freely commented on by those who had been fortunate enough to sec it, and the general opinion was that it was the best match seen in Auckland for several years. He considered the selector and the captain of the team were to lie congratulated on its play.

A deputation consisting of Messrs. P. L. Peterson, 11. Fuller and A. Hayes, representing the Waiuku Sub-Union, waited on the committee in reference to a request for a loan from the New Zealand Union to lighten its commitmonts in connection with its ground at Waiuku. It was stated that the ground was easily the finest in the district.

The chairman stated that, subject to satisfactory guarantees being provided by the Waiuku Union, the Auckland Union would support the application to the New Zealand Union. Ho thought the deputation was to be congratulated on the good work done for Rugby in its district.

The Auckland Transport Board advised that sports concession tickets would now be available from 12.30 p.m. on Saturdays, in accordance with the union's request. It was decided to thank the board for its consideration.

I lie Bay of Plenty Union wrote Inquiring if Auckland teams would be able to visit Whakatane this season. Consideration of this matter was deferred for a week. Mr. Colgan asked if the colts' team would be touring that district. In reply the chairman stated that the colts'' team was not selected yet, and in any case he doubted the wisdom of putting a colts' team against the Bay of Plenty sido after the latter team's good performances in the south. It was pointed out that the Barbarians' team, including several international and representative players, would be playing in Whakatane on August 0.

The University Club was authorised to play Massey College at Palinerston North on July in.

The following list of representative referees was submitted by the appointments board:— Messrs. C. W. Henderson, J. A. Malcolm, G. Peace, G. E. Cooksey, J. G. C. Wales. A letter was received from the Suburbs Club regarding the regrading of G. Hiscocks. It was decided that the matter was one for the junior management board.

THAMES UNION CLASH OF FIXTURES [by telegraph—owx correspondent] THAMES, Wednesday That the first Peace Gup game on July 17 clashed with the Thames Valley v. Waikato fixture was pointed out at a meeting of the Thames Rugby Union last night. Requests had been made by the Hauraki Plains Union, whose representative team will meet Thames on Die day in question, that the date should bo altered, as many of its men would be playing in the Thames Valley team. The secretary pointed ont that no alteration could be made from tho draw as the Peace Cup rules clearly stated that matches shall not be started later than the third Saturday in July. The Thames Union had no option. It was to be hoped that Thames Valley would release tho Hauraki Plains players so that' a full team could be fielded for the initial match. NORTHERN WAIROA UNION CRITICISM OF SELECTION [from our own correspondent] DARGAVILLE, Wednesday

Criticism of the method by which players were selected for the North Auckland trial match at Whangarei on July 20 was voiced by Air. B. D. Gould, selector for Northern Wairoa, at a meeting of the management committee of the Northern Wairoa Rugby Union last evening. He said that neither the southern zone selector, Mr. D. Stewart, nor tho North Auckland selector, Mr. K. lfwerson, had attended the match at Dargavillo between Northern Wairoa and Whangarei and that, on his own account, he submitted the names of five players for inclusion in the trial game, four of whom had been chosen to play. Mr. Gould criticised the system whereby only 30 players were asked to play in the trial match instead of provision having been made for the inclusion of emergencies. lie said there were 13 Whungarei players chosen for the trial match.

Mr. P. Brydon explained that Mr. Ifwerson's absence from the recent WhangareiNorthern Wairoa match was on account of his being recalled to Auckland on business. He thought that nothing could be done this season in the matter, and that it was better to bring the question up next season. Offers to send teams to Dargaville to play the Northern Wairoa Rugby Union's senior representative team were received from the Suburbs and Technical 01<J Boys' Clubs (Auckland). It was decided to reply to the Suburbs Club pointing out that the date suggested, August <>, was not convenient as Northern Wairoa was playing a Harding Shield match on that, date, and asking that the club submit another date. The Technical Old Boys' offer to visit Dargaville on either July 23 or August G was declined owing to Northern Wairoa playing Otamatea on July 23 and a Hardinj? Shield match on August <>. The Kaipara Union advised that, owing to its full programme, it was unable to send a team to Dargaville this season.
