RESEARCH SCHEME

RHEUMATISM CASES THREE BRITISH DOCTORS THE EMPIRE COUNCIL. [from our own correspondent] LONDON, June 18 • Three doctors have now embarked on what Lord Hordcr describes as "a voyage of discovery" into the scourge of rheumatism, a voyage which will last at least seven and possibly 10 years. To wish tht.ni success in their research work, Lord Horder gave a luncheon at the Athenaeum Club to tho team, Drs. C. B. Dyson, H. J. Taylor and W. S. Tegner, who are tho first three Research Fellows appointed by the Empire Rheumatism Council. Dr. Taylor and Dr. Dyson will work together principally in a special laboratory which has been built through the generosity of Mr. Alexander Maclean at the Hospital of St. John and St. Elizabeth in Maida Vale, London. individual work will also be undertaken by Dr. Dyson at his own hospital, St. Mary's, Pnddington, where for 17 years he has been in the Pathological Research Department, and by Dr. Taylor at St. Stephen's Hospital. Each has resigned, his. present post. While they are at work in London, Dr. Tegner, as holder of the Sir Alexander Watson Travelling Scholarship, is to tour Europe, Canada and the United States for a year to study and report on tho methods of treatment in tho principal rheumatism " clinics abroad. Sir Joseph Burn made an appeal tp big employers to further the council's work. "If only someone could make it clear to tho public what this plague of rheumatism really means." he said, "1 feel so sorry for people who are obliged to devote their whole lives to attending to sufferers from the complaint. "There are thousands of poor daughters who must stop at home to nurse their mothers. It is a whole life of horror for them. They have no recreation at all. I would like to commend to employers tho burden these peoplo willingly bear. "The number of young girls who give up their lives to their parents is appallina:. ]f employers knew what a big drain it is on industry I am sure thej would further our campaign."
