TRANSPORT CHARGES
STABILISATION SOUGHT ROTORUA AND BAY OF PLENTY [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] ROTORUA, Wednesday As a result of dissatisfaction concerning cartage charges in the Rotorua and Bay of Plenty districts negotiations are now under way to stabilise the prices for given distances and classes of work.
Under tho Transport Act the various transport licensing authorities have power to fix charges. It is the policy of the authorities, however, not to act. unless the operators themselves cannot first reach an amicable agreement regarding rates. With this object in view it is understood that all carriers' associations in tho Bay of Plenty district have re, cently Wen in negotiation and have constituted an advisory board, which has prepared a suggested schedule of charges. Another mooting will bo held in Rotorua shortly, when, in addition to carriers themselves, storekeepers, farmers, millers and others will be invited to attend, and the suggested rates will bo discussed. ]f the various parties agree concerning the rates they will then be submitted to the No. 1 Transport Licensing Authority for approval and will become tho fixed rates for the district. If. however, they cannot agree, a, special sitting of tho authority will be necessary, when all interested parties will be g\ven the opportunity ol' placing their views before tho authority. If they are still unable to agree the Authority will exerciso its powers and fix: the charges.
