CUSTOMS OFFICER FORMER NEW ZEALANDER SMUGGLING IN CHINA [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] WELLINGTON, Wednesday Chasing smugglers and avoiding Japanese bombs provide a life crammed with excitement for Captain C. F. Gaby, of the Chinese Maritime Customs at Fuchow. Captain Gaby is a New Zealander, his home town being Geraldine, and ho arrived by the Wanganella yesterday to spend the greater pari of a year's leave of absence in tho Dominion. Ho was accompanied by his wife and infant daughter and a Chinese nursemaid. Captain Gaby has followed the sea since he was 13 years old, having received his early training on the old training ship Amokura, now a coal hulk in ,Wellington Harbour. He was formerly in tho service of the Union Steam Ship Company, but for the past six years has been a member of the Chinese Maritime Customs, which organisation is mainly concerned with the prevention of smuggling. Sugar was one of the main articles attempted to be smuggled into the country, said Captain Gaby, and the suppression of smuggling results in hostilities. Recently a dozen were killed in olio encounter. Captain Gaby was in Fuchow when it was bombed by the Japanese and he saw numbers of women and children dead as a result of the raids.
