DRIVER'S THIRD LAPSE
SECOND GAOL SENTENCE INTOXICATED IN CHARGE NO LENIENCY FROM COURTS [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCHURCH, Friday " I cannot display any leniency, and this aud other Courts will not tolerate any leniency where drunken individuals are in charge of such dangerous machines as motor-cars. Accused was in Court in 1934 for intoxication in charge, and again in 1936 for a similar offence. On the last occasion he was sentenced to imprisonment. On this occasion he will be sent to goal for three months, with hard labour, and his licence will be cancelled for five years." This judgment was delivered by Mr. E. C. Levvey, S.M., to-day, when Robert Franklin Dobson, aged 25, appeared for sentence on a charge of being intoxicated in charge of a car.
Two of Dobson's companions, Rex Zaveri Beri, aged 19, and James Laurence Finnerty, aged 20, also appeared" for "sentence for unlawfully converting a car. They were each fined £lO, in. default 30 days. Earlier in the day all three had been before the Supreme Court and admitted by Mr. Justice Northcroft to three years' probation for breaking and entering.
