WAIKATO SHOW

POPULAR FIXTURE MANY COUNTRY VISITORS INCREASED GATE TAKINGS [from OUR OWN CORRKSPONnENT] HAMILTON. Tuesday With a continuance of the fine weather that has prevailed since tho Waikato Winter Show opened its 11W8 season on June 1, crowds again flocked to the exhibition to-day. From early in tho morning cars, trains and special buses mado their way into tho town, and traffic officers again had a busy time. The regular farmers' day in Hamilton is Tuesday, and therefore large numbers of country folk arrived at an early hour. By tho time tho show doors were opened a queue blocked the footpaths outside. The halls of the show buildings were packed with people by mid-day, while the outdoor section of tho exhibition also maintained its popularity. Competitions in the concert liall again attracted a great deal of interest, and the national dancing events and entertainments provided in tho Bledisloo Hall were also very popular. The international photographic salon, which in its second year has become ono of tho features of the show, was inspected by large crowds. Exhibition Model A scale relief model of a proposed design for tho New Zealand Centennial Inhibition, which is on display in the model engineering section, was much admired by visitors. Designed by a Hamilton architectural student, Mr. T. F. Haughey, and modelled by Mr. G. I. Leigh, also of Hamilton, the model is a particularly fine one. It was designed to be constructed, on the seashore at Lyall Bay, Wellington, and is complete in every detail. The best single day ever previously experienced by the Waikato Winter Show Association was eclipsed yesterday, when tho gate takings for the day exceeded four figures, an increase of over 20 per cent on the previous best gate. A special train from Botorua brought a largo crowd of schoolchildren to tho show during tho day. Special trains from Thames and Tauranga will arrive to-morrow. Owing to the outbreak of infantile paralysis last year schoolchildren were not admitted to the show, but this year they aro being specially catered for, and it is estimated that by the end of the exhibition more than 20,000 children will have been the guests of tho association. _ The show will continue until Ihursday evening.
