TRIALS AT RICCARTON SEVEN FURLONGS BY GILLIE PALMYRA SEEN TO ADVANTAGE [BY TELKGBAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] CHRISTCHUECH, Saturday A few horses entered for the Dun-, edin Jockey Club's Winter Meeting were galloped 011 the No. i grass track. There was also some useful work on the plough. Gillie, The Wrecker and Settlement, after seven furlongs, finished in that order at intervals of a neck in the good time of 1.28 3-5, the first four taking 50 1-os. Gillie earn further distinction at Wingatui, while Settlement, who is not a good track worker, is also likely to make a return. •; Swordstiek and Palmyra ran six furlongs attractively in 1.15 3-5, the first three in 38 3-ss. Palmyra will accompany Gillie to Wingatui and. taking; a line on her Timaru form, she may be expected to race prominently. Flame Queen and Linguist covered five furlongs in 1.2 3-5. Golden Chest ran three furlongs in 38s. Clubman and Alby were companions over an easy five furlongs, run in 1.6. Mungatoon was allotted a working • gallop over seven furlongs and Studley Boyal was allowed to stride Over seven furlongs on the plough. , -I PunchestuwD set off for a round of the country", followed at an interval by Silver Sight, who, however, ran off the first aiid repeated the offence at the next fence. He was kept on at the third, making a bold leap, but he ran off at the next four fences. Silver i Sight lind given a satisfactory showing | by'himself earlier in the week and his ; first effort in company came as a big j disappointment. It is doubtful if he j will further be persevered with over | Country * . ' | Manetha, ridden by his trainer, Mr. ! ! W. Westenra, gave a good display over hurdles. He contested hurdle races last season and he may be useful later. Gas Mask is another to be added to the growing list of novice jumpers. He jumped two pory hurdles and two of the bigger obstacles in a creditable manner.

J. Tonikinson has recommissioned J?aphis, the three-year-old sister to Phar Lap. and has sent home the jumper, William Rnfus, who injured himself while schooling. ■ *'

NOTES FROM EVERYWHERE TRACK AND STABLE GOSSIP ;Mr. W. Devon's Australian purchase, Gay Chou, arrived with the filly Maori Maid in Wellington Awatea on Thursday. Maori Mam,. by . Roydon from Bohebe.em, was sent .to Australia the Hon. G. R. Hunter in. January ot last year. Mr. Colin Anderson will again be represented in the spring with a very racy-looking colt by Musketoon, who is td be prepared at Takanini by F.<; Smith. Although only in the educational stages, the colt is one of the best-looking youngsters on the ■'track. ') v "* The Australian jockey L. Gough, who received injuries to his leg when The Trimmer fell with him at Ellerslie on Thursday morning, expects to be fit to ride again this week. Since being at Ellerslie Gough's services have been much in demand for schooling purposes. When Riotous came to grief in the Waikato Steeplechase at Te Rapa last Monday his rider, W. J. McDowell, suffered broken ribs. If recovered, McDowell will ride L. Knapp's team, which includes Riotous, Forest Glow, Porotiti and Hirangi, at the Auckland Racing Club's Winter Meeting. Two yearling fillies are being educated at Trentham by T. Yates, who last season was the trainer of Rona Bay. A bay filly bv Inflation from Divola, by Dincquenod from Arola, was bought by Mr. A. H. Dovino, Petone, for 32£ guineas, and the other, a chestnut by Defoe, from Santa Anna, by. Paper Money—Sautaline,, cost Mr. 11. Meadows, Wellington, 75 guineas. Galleon and Mona's Song will not be rated again until the spring. Galleon was sore on pulling up after the Awarun Handicap at Invercargill. Mona's Song has been one of the most consistent gallopers raced in Southland during the autumn, but she is unable to act on soft tracks. She should be a valuable recruit to next season's cup fields. Abolition of the rule requiring horses to-leave the birdcage 20 minutes before the start of a race was advocated by Mr. D. W. Westenra at the annual meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club last week. After it had been stated that there was practically no chance of securing agreement, on the suggestion at the New Zealand Racing Conference the discussion lapsed without any action being decided upon. For the past two years a ball has heen organised by the jockeys of Auckland Province as a benefit for one of their number who has met with misfortune while engaged .in race-riding. Tiiis year's function will be held at Ellerslie on June 30 and'the proceeds are to be devoted -to the assistance of. U. E. Thomson, who was seriously injured while schooling at Te Rapa several months ago. % ! trotting fixtures . June 4. Trotting* CJu^*" JES B ' Trotting ,
