HASTINGS HORSES

SPRINT BY JAZZ BOY gironde defeats lindrum THALA GOES ATTRACTIVELY [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] HASTINGS, Saturday Threo winter meetings are to be held in this district within 14 days and there is more activity now on the Hastings and Greenmeadows tracks than for several weeks past, l'he tracks are in good order. At Hastings, lied Witch, in company with her half-brother, impressed in running threo furlongs in U6Js. Tho latter, a rising three-year-old, is very promising. He will have his first raco at Hastings in preparation for the Trentham Trial Stakes.

lddo, who lost condition on the trip to Te Rapa, worked freely. His withdrawal from the Great Northern Hurdles leaves this district without a representative at Ellerslie, as Happy Landing was not forward enough to essay tiie Cornwall Handicap, and Journet met with an accident,, necessitating a spell in the paddock. Lddo will find the class at the Hawke's Bay meetings more to his taste. Brilliant Acre, a disappointing novice, easily ran half a- mile in 525. Imogen, against the bit, recorded 40s for three furlongs. Making Rapid Improvement Jazz Boy, a rapidly-jmproving hack, pleased in recording 50.}s for half a mile. He looks a likely sort to win early. Mesurina and Haniarin, given a working gallop under Bracelet weights, registered I.4'J. Haniarin is back to her best form. Silver Jubilee, hard held, covered five furlongs in 1.7, showing a glimpse of his old speed, but as a hurdler, he j has much to learn. The best short gallop for the morning was registered by Gironde, who beat Lindrum by two lengths in 1.3. Gironde is full-brother to Ben Bragand he should win shortly. Refulgent beat Hillside over four furlongs in olis. Refulgent is an outside possibility for the second day at Napier Park. Pladie and Tres Sec were assigned a gallop over seven furlongs, taking l.&'L The latter has been schooling exceptionally well, but he has not raced up to his form hitherto. Running well within themselves, Buster Brown and Padishah registered ■ 1.43 i for a round. Padishah is engaged ; in the Flying Handicap at Napier. : Trailer was not extended in gallop- } ing six furlongs. In middle-distance ! events, he should be kept in Jiiind, j especially now that the sting is out ) of the going. i Master Hector and Colenso were ! timed to run 1.45£ for a round. The | latter, since winning at Canterbury | Park, Sydney, has failed in all his DoI minion engagements, j Royal Ace, who has improved since | coining from Auckland, sprinted three ! furlongs in 38s. He is improving with I age. His former trainer at Takanini, I A. Quinlivan, .was on the track to see ' him work. I Sardius, after jumping three hurdles | indifferently, galloped live furlongs in ; 1.42, with more than 9.0 in the saddle. Round by Scho

Solto ran a round in 1.45. He was recently schooled, giving an impressive exhibition. He is one of tho best novice jumpers to be schooled at Hastings for some years, but lack c. l ' real staying power may prevent . hiin reaching National Hurdle class. Happy Landing, after two solid rounds, came home the last three furlongs in 41s. He has developed into a good type of handicap horse. Ate," who is by Lord Quex from Squeeze, a full-sister to Cuddle, assisted by Jacvnth, covered three furlongs in*3Bs. The former appears to be above tho average, and wdl have her first race at Hastings. Thala dashed over six furlongs in 1.154. In spite of many previous attractive gallops this mare has only two victories to her credit.

Nino Martini and Harbor Bar Rare a splendid exhibition over two rounds of the country. They took fence after fence stride for stride. Although neither has raced, they should make a name for themselves.

Royal Toast impressed in a round of the fences. Properly placed, he will more than pay his way, as he has had a couple of seasons' hunting experience. Acron surprised in finishing ahead of Contact in a round of the hurdles, giving a high-class display. Agog outpaced and out-jumped liovelilt in a similar task. Lnreljjt has been acquitting herself well, but this morning'she went poorly,. landing on nil fours at each obstacle. Work at Oreenmeadows

At Greoumeadows, John Charles gave a splendid exhibition over the fences. Last season, he won impressively tlie Trentham Hurdles and Winter Hurdles. He was assisted in tho first round by the novice, Skerryvore, who is by Cockpit from Sinella, a half-sister to the Great Northern winner, Kohu. Skerryvore is another novice who looks like making the grade. Royal Banquet will race on the second day at Napier and once at Hastings, then will go to Wellington. Ha pa Waiata, accompanied by Father's Choice, made no mistake over six schooling hurdles. For a beginner, Tractile went pleasingly in a similar task. Sunny Lass, who has measurably improved, easily ran half a mile in 525. Big Dook, looking lusty, sprinted smartly over half a mile. He is considered in the light of a middle-distance performer, but ho may be hard to beat in the Flying Handicap at Napier. INJURY TO FOREST GLOW MAY RUN IN WINTER STEEPLES [BV TKI.KCK.U'H —OWN CORRESPONDENT] WELLINGTON, Sunday Forest Glow did not accept for the Great Northern Steeplechase owing to a leg filling after'the Te Uapa meeting. The trouble was. a ruptured vein but it is hoped ho will be recovered in time to run in the Winter Steeplechase 011 the third day. CASE OF C.
