ELLERSLIE WORK

JOLLY BEGGAR PLEASES

DISPLAY OVER COUNTRY SOUND ROUND BY KILONSA TYBALT'S SEVEN FURLONGS A good exhibition over the steeplechase course by Jolly Beggar was one of the; highlights of the work at Ellerslie on Saturday morning, when those to gallop well included Kilonsa, Tybalt and Fleetwind. • The hurdlers had the use of the course proiier for schooling, and the No. 1 grass, with the poles 10ft. out, was available for galloping. The going was in fair order. On the No. 1 grass Kilonsa (McTaviah) was travelling well just in front of Knight of Australia (Tremain) at the end of a round in 1.57 1-5, the last six furlongs taking 1.20 1-5. Wee Pat (Williams) went with them at the six furlongs, but was several lengths away at the finish. Kilonsa, who is usually a. lazy worker, went particularly well. Palmint (Fearn) and Electric Spear (B. Fearn) finished together in front of Aymon (Gallagher) at the conclusion of five furlongs in 1.5 4-5. Bronze Wing (Metcalfe), Master Appellant (Stokes) and Bright Idea (Buchanan) finished in close order at tho ejtd of six furlongs in 1.25 3-5. Bronze Wing, who was under a good hold, worked impressively. Captain Bruce (Fearn) and Bonnybelle (Trcniain) showed improvement by sprinting half a mile in 51s.- There was little between them at the finish. High Star (McTavish) strode over a round in 2.5 4-5, the last six furlongs in 1.26 3-5. He was always going comfortably and looks in first-rate order. El Meynell (Green) did not impress j while running live furlongs in 1.7, the first two in 275.

Clarion Call was given strong work over a mile and a-quarter, being timed to run the last round in 2.14 1-5. He worked freely. Biotous was allotted a' similar task. Brilliant Half-mile Fleetwind (Gilchrist) ran half a mile brilliantly in 49 2-ss, th*. first furlong in 12 4-ss. Her form is very disappointing in view of her good track work.

The novices Gold hand (O'Connor), I Talak and Tupeotu (Butterwortli) finished in that order in a sprint over three furlongs, but were not timed. School Song (Gilchrist) led Disturbed (Gallagher) throughout seven furlongs, the last six taking 1.19. School Song continues to show improvement. Tybalt (Gilchrist) was responsible for a good effort over seven furlongs in 1.31 1-5. He ran the last six in 1.18 and was going 011 strongly at the finish. Mnl-do-Mer (Tucker) easily accounted for Summary (Watson) over seven furlongs in 1.37 1-5, the last three taking 41 l-ss. Crooning (Tremain) finished slightly better than Prival (Walker) at the end of half a mile in 50s, the first furlong in 12 3-ss. It was a smart effort on the part of both. Piracy (Murray) was not bustled over three furlongs in 41s. Waitaka (Tremain) traversed seven furlongs in 1<32 4-5. He was doing it very comfortably and could have improved considerably on the time. Alyth (Gilchrist) ran the last halfmile of her work in 51 4-ss. Valmint (Murray) strode over seven furlongs in 1..'59, the last four in 53 2-ss. He was always doing it comfortably. Shy (Nicolson) went over three furlongs, but was not out to make time.

Silk Sox (Dulieu) worked freely over a couple of circuits on the sand. His stablemato Wotan was let off with a light task. Porotiti (Smith) and Hirangi (Watson) gave a good fast display over four of the hurdles on the course proper, Tahne Men (Gough), who jumped slowly, finished well behind them. Hirangi (Watson") was then sent over four of the steeplechase fences on the flat, which he cleared in fine style.

King Musk Injured

On the course proper, King Musk (Gough) slipped on landing over the first hurdle and came to grief. He appeared to suffer an injury and was decidedly lame afterward. Those to take part in a round over the steeplechase course included .Tolly Beggar (RidgwavY, Royal Mimic (Smith), Piripi (Feasy), My Money (Stokes), Ground Swell (Clarke), Killadar (Watson). Windsor Lass (Mmr) and Top Star (Craddock). Commencing at the* stonewall at the top of - -the straight, where Ground Swell ran- off, Royal Mimic and I'iripi led the others over the double, sod wall and brush fence. On top of the hill Royal Mimic was well clear of Piripi, Killadar and My Money with Jolly Beggar, who had been taken along quietly in the early stages moving up. After jumping the stonewall at the foot of the hill, Royal Mimic, Piripi and Windsor Lass were pulled off. and Jolly Beggar went on to load over the remaining four fences well clear of Killadar and My Money. Top Star, who was just in behind .Tolly Beggar approaching the first of the double the last time, stumbled and broke a foreleg and was subsequently destroved. Jolly Beggar's performance .rained him many admirers. Although he started off" a little carefully, be soon trained confidence and over the concluding stages he fenced with great dash and finished full of running. Royal Mimic was responsible for an attractive display of fast jumping and there is little'doubt of his capabilities as a 'chaser. Of the others, Piripi and Iviliadar shaped very creditably.
