WIN FOR GLANVILLE J. E. STEDMAN RUNNER-UP HANDICAP TO D. J. THOMSON [BY TELEGRArH —OWN COBRESrONDENT] WHANGAREI, Sunday Splendid conditions prevailed for the final matches in the North Auckland golf championship, which were played "on the Mount Denby links of the Whangarei Golf Club yesterday, a large gallery of spectators watching with keen interest the final during the afternoon, when W. J. Glanville, AVliangarei, secured the title by defeating J. E. Stedmau, Auckland, 1 up. In the semi-finals §tedman heat S. Clark, 3 and 2, and Glanville beat G. W. Foote, 2 and 1. Other winners during the three days' tournament were:—

North Aucklnnd Amateur Handicap.—D. J. Thomson, Whangarei; runner-up, C. R, Hargrave, Rotorua. Medal Handicaps.—A. A. Finlayson. G. Worker and R. A. McLean.

Bogey Handicap.—A. H. Grant. Stableford Bogey.—J. H. Aitken. Four-ball Best-ball Bogey.—A. A. Finlay son and D. McLean.

Group finals played yesterday resulted as follows; —

Group I.—Thomson beat Foote, 4 and 3; group 2, H. Wilson beat Harrison, 3 and 2; group 3, Thorne beat D. McLeod, 1 up; group 4, Worker beat Cullen. 2 and J; group 5, Orr. jun., beat A. A. Finlayson on tho 19th; group (i, Johnston beat (iregson. 3 and -• ....

A special group for players eliminated from the liundicaps resulted: — Semi-finals. —Jacobsen beat Chalmers, 2 up; Aitken beat Johnson, 7 and G. Finali J. M. Aitken (Glendowie) beat C. N. Jacobsen (Middlemore), 1 up. Results of a special group for players eliminated from the championships were:— Semi-finals. —Mann beat Sheriff, (5 and 5: Jollv beat Brainsby on the 19th. Final: H. E. Jolly (Glendowie) beat J. Mann (Wellsford), 2 and 1. A four-ball best-ball bogey was won by A.. A. Finlayson and D. McLean (Whangarei) with a card of 4 up. Play in the Final In the final of the championship, Stedman took the first hole with a nice 4. Glanville found his second in the rough to the lip of the green at the next, but recovered well to sink his putt for a 5, while Stedman just failed. Stedman again took the lead at the third and increased it at the fourth, holing a nice putt for par figures. Glanville hit a tremendous drive at the next hole, but steady shots by Stedman made it a half. Both were on the green at the 11th in 2. Glanville again sank a nico putt for a birdie and a win. The 3 3th was halved uneventfully in fives, but at the 14 th Stedman was short with his first, and still not up with his next, to lose the hole to a steadily played 3. Glanville hooked his tee shot at the 15th, but recovered well to be on for 2. but could not hole his putt for a half. The 16th found both drives well away. Stedman played a great second right on the pin and was very unlucky to run through However, he recovered well to get a half. Both were short of the green at the 17th. Glanville chipped over to the bunker to leave himself a 12ft putt, while Stedman had a great chance with a four-footer to square the match. However, the ball stopped on the edge and the players went to the last hole with Glanville 1 up. Stedman hit his tee shot nicely and stopped 6ft from the flag, while Glanville, who had failed to stay on the green, was too strong with his second and short with his third. Then the strain told, and after Glanville had holed a 4ft putt for a 4, Stedman missed a short putt for a half. ; - - - ■> Five Times Champion Glanville, who is a master at the Whangarei High School, has been North Auckland amateur champion on five occasions. He first won the title in 1931, to lose it again in 1932, but 1933 saw him again champion. He held the title until last year, when it went to W. Macindoe, North Shore. Glanville played consistently good golf throughout, but the runner-up, Stedman, although he had accounted for Brinsden earlier in the tournament, seemed to falter in the final. In the North Auckland handicap semifinals D. J. Thomson beat K. O. Potter, 2 up, and Bargrave beat Sheen, 1 up. D. J. Thomson, Whangarei, beat C. R.
