RETIRING PRINCIPAL
TIMARU HIGH t APPRECIATION OF WORK Many tributes to the services given by Miss J. R. Barr, lady principal of the Tiraaru Girls' High School since 1923, who is now retiring, were paid by the Mayor, Mr. P. B. Foote, the chairman of the Timaru High School Board of Governors, Mr. H. H. Fraser, and the president of the Timaru High School Old Girls' Association, Miss Isa Young, at a farewell gathering held at Timaru on Saturday night. On behalf of the Old Girls' Association, Miss Barr was presented with a canteen of cutlery and a Chinese necklace. The board of governors presented her with a chiming mantel clock, a set of fish knives and forks, and a set of fish slicers. A further gift consisted of a gold wristlet watch, given to her from the old girls, the school and the house. Miss Barr was met previously by the pupils and staff of the school, who combined in a farewell function in her honour. The ' head prefect, Joan Gaffaney, presented Miss Barr with a dinner service on behalf of the school, and expressed the regret of all at her retirement. On behalf of the staff, Miss Ronaldson presented Miss Barr with a walnut table, a coffee service, and spoons, assuring her of the donors' gfatitude and love.
