TAKANINI HORSES

WORK ON INSIDE GRASS HOT BOX BEATS ARVAKUH ROUND UP IN FINE FETTLE The inside grass track, with the poles out 20ft., was in use at Takanini yesterday morning, when tho semi-final gallops for the Ellerslie carnival wore staged. The going was excellent, but the times were not fast, owing to horsos covering extra ground. The plough was used for pace work. The most interesting trial was that over five furlongs between Hot Box and Arvnkur The former prevailed. Valaniito was a shade too good for Hound Up over seven furlongs, and Pocket Venus ran the best half-mile.

Anion (Bartle) was going comfortably against Milanion (G. Smith) at the end of five furlongs, run in 1.4 2-5, the last three occupying 40s. Anion was on tho outside and finished well. Trio in Good Trial Hound Up (T. Green) on the inside, Valaniito (Bartle) and High Sea (Smith) went away from the seven-fuir-'m'S post. High Sea did not get into his stride as quickly as his companions, who ran the first three, furlongs in 37 l-5.5, and the full distanco in 1.30 1-5, Valaniito being half a length to the good, and High Sea, who finished well, three-quarters of a length away. It was a good trial for all three, and Hound Up lias never looked better. Silver Glow (Parkinson) did not put much effort into his finish over five furlongs in 1.8 2-5, taking 43s for the last three. Pleuron, with Brazilian, who has lightened up since racing at Whangarei, did slow work.

Ivy Willonyx (Vaughan) gave Seiga (Curwen) a few lengths' start in a six-furlong gallop, and they finished together in 1.17 4-5, taking 40 2-5s for the second section. Ivy Willonyx looks well.

Inquisitor (Vaughan) went poorly over six furlongs in 1.23. He is very lazy on the track Mia Acra (C. Walters) jumped four flights of hurdles in a workmanlike manner. Golden Spahi (P. Mcllroy) followed suit with another good exhibition. Second Session After the breakfast interval, Hot Box (Bartle) and Arvakur (McTavish) went to the barrier with the colours up. Jumping out together, and timed from a flying start, they ran five furlongs in the smart time of 1.2 3-5. They took 36s for the first three and 48 3-5s over the first half-mile, where they were together, with Hot Box on the outside. Hot Box was half a length in front at the finish. This was also Arvakur's best track gallop for some time. Pocket Venus (Clifford) and Nordic Song (Hatwell) were companions for four furlongs. Pocket Venus left her companion, running the first three furlongs in 36 3-5s and the four in 495. Valameen (Wiggins) and Royevrus (Cameron) followed over the same ground, the filly in W. H. Paterson's stable starting with them. The two-year-old ran the first three furlongs in 37s and the half-mile in 50 2-os. Royeorus was conceding his companion a fair amount of weight. Palustre (Curwen) was too good for Jane Ace (Hatwell) over five furlongs in 1.4. She took 27 3-5s for the last quarter.

Those worked on the plough were Vauls Star, Grateful, Inver, Sacconi, who is now building up, Wykemist and Flood Tide.
