MERCHANT IN COURT ILLICIT RECEIVING CHARGE STATEMENT BY DETECTIVE [by TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] CIIRISTCHUECH, Monday Bail of £3OOO was allowed Hugh Lowther when he appeared in tho Magistrate's Court to-day charged with illicitly receiving a 400-gallon tank valued at £8 10s. The large bail was fixed by Mr. E. C. Levvey, S.M., after hearing a strong plea by the police ior a substantial amount. The total was made up of £IOOO in his own recognisance and two sureties of £1(X)0 each. Lowther is to report daily to the police until April 28. Detective-Sergeant Holmes flaked for a lengthy remand, saying that a very large sum was involved and many charges were to be investigated. He said the affair was going to develop into a very largo one, and several city firms would probably bo involved. Mr. W. R. Lascelles., for Lowther, said the accused was a well-known merchant in the city, and wished to attend to his business. John Searle, charged with stealing a 400-gallon tank, was remanded until April 28 on bail of £25 and one surety of £25.
