STRETTO GOES NICELY FIVE FURLONGS IN 1.3 3-5 KNIGHT OF AUSTRALIA'S MILE JACK TAR WORKS SOUNDLY A good effort over five furlongs by the Easter Handicap favourite, Stretto, was a feature of the work at Ellerslie on Saturday. The course proper, with the poles 50ft. out, was available and was in excellent order, although not fast.

Kilonsa (McCurdy) was allotted a working gallop over seven furlongs, which she covered in 1.37. Sho is very fit.

Bronze Emerald (Murray), after taking 13 4-5s for the first furlong, completed half a-mile in 52 3-os. He worked pleasingly and is to take his place in the field for tho Great Northern Champagne Stakes next Saturday. Knight of Australia (Murray) traversed a milo in 1.48 4-5, the last half in 52 4-ss. It was a pleasing performance and he impressed by the manner in which he finished.

After running the first two in 255, Stretto (Coon), got to the end of five furlongs in 1.3 3-5. Sho worked attractively and appeared to be going comfortably at tho end. Aero King and Trevace (Murray) were companions over five furlongs in 1.6. The first two took 25 3-5s and Aero King was going the better at the finish. He has made good progress of late.

Neil (Kerr) worked solidly over a mile and a-quarter without being timed. Ho is in good shape for his steeplechase engagements. Jack Tar (Coon) reeled off six furlongs in 1.18 3-5, the first three in 38s. Ho put plenty of dash into his work and promises to raco well at the autumn meetings. Surella (Ritchie) had the better of Fidelis (Markwick) over half a-miie in 53 2-ss.

To Hai (Manson), Valmint (Camuiick) and Mai de Mer (Murray) finished in that order at the end of six furlongs in 1.21 4-5, the first three taking 40s. Te Hai, who was wide out, went attractively and appeared to have a lot in hand. He is to raco on the second day at Ellerslio. Valmint also worked well, although not asked to do his best.

All Irish (O'Connor) easily beat Adsuin over seven furlongs in 1.39. All Irish, who has been working well, may be given a raco at Avondale. Adsuin (Smith) jumped four of the steeplechase fences 011 the flat in good style. TAKININI TRAINING EARLY GALLOPS IN FOG ROYEVRUS MOVES FREELY ' A thick fog, which did not lift until after 7 a.m.. precluded the timing of the early gallops at Takanini on Saturday. The inside grass, with the poles out 15ft., was in use and the going was good. The plough was also available.

On the grass Valamito (Pollett) was a length in front of Round Up (Inglis) at the end of seven furlongs. Round Up, on the outside, was conceding weight to his companion. Anion (Bartle) worked ove? five furlongs and was keen to go faster at the finish. Milanion, who has improved considerably with his recent racing, did easy work. Mia Acrea (Walters) worked ovor a round, increasing the pace toward the finish. He is quite sound on his injured leg. Hot Box (Inglis) and Arvakur (Bartle) were under a strong hold while covering five furlongs. Arvakur made a lot of noise.

Siega (Collett) and High Sea (Parkinson) worked over six furlongs. High Sea ran out very wide, about half-way up the straight, but no defect was noticeable afterwards.

The fog suddenly lilted as a gelding in W. Patterson's stablo and Silver Glow (Parkinson) set out to run five furlongs, which Silver Glow covered in 1.8 after running the first furlong in 13s. His companion was pulled up in the straight. Nordic Song (Hatwell) was not after time while working over four furlongs. Palustre (Curwen) was going easily to run five furlongs in 1.7 2-5, the last three in 40 4-ss.

Goldon Spahi (Hatwell) was to have accompanied Boyevrus (Curwen) over four furlongs from the five-furlong post, but Golden Spahi could not begin as quickly as tlio two-year-old rival, who gained several lengths, and was being held' back right through the gallop, which occupied 525. The first two wore run in 25 2-ss, and they were together at the finish.

Valimeen trotted and cantered once round. Pocket Venus (Curwen). went steadily over four furlongs in 525, taking 26s for tho first two furlongs. P. E. Pope has added to his team the filly Penzance, by Paceful—-Lady Lois. It. will be remembered that this filly ran second in the Avondale Stakes last season. She has been spelling for a considerable time. High Quality, who was taken up recently after a spell, has again shown signs of soreness and is to bo treated to a long rest. Takanini-trained horses were in the limelight at the Whangarei meeting, as apart from occupying all three places in one race, those to earn stake money were Paddy tho Pip, Red Ledger, Vanls Star, Grateful, Tuver, Asset, Brazilian. Rajanya, Teak, Misohcl, Parquet and Bachelor King. TRIALS AT TE RAPA ROUND BY MASTER BRIERLY [by telegraph—own correspondent] HAMILTON, Saturday A round by Master Brierly was the only trial of note at Te llapa this morning, when tho going on tho course proper 30ft. out from the rails, provided excellent footing. Fog enveloped the course early.

Malagigi (R. G, O'Zanne) finished in front of Dark Shadow (R. D, Telford) on the completion of a round in 2.5 2-5. Malagigi looks well. Master Brierly (J. Winder) finished attractively to bo a length clear of Sinking Fund (O'Zanne) at the end of a circuit in 2.1 2-5. Master Brierly looks a picture of condition and ho should give a good account of himself in his Ellerslie engagements. Ho is an acceptor for the President's Handicap. Valpai (F. Hain) accounted for Sand-drift (O'Zanne) in a similar essay which occupied 2.5. is on the upgrade and has prospects in the Brighton Hurdles.

Pirate King (Winder) nnd the two-year-old Vitement (Haiu) wero companions over half a-mile in 51 l-ss, the first three furlongs being run in 375. Pirate King is bearing an improved appearance. Du Maurier (O'Zanne) and Hunting Blood (Telford) brushed over three furlongs in 36 2-ss. Cometarium (Winder) ran two furlongs along the back in 25 3-ss. Ccntaurus (Winder) schooled well over the pony fences along the back. Mr. G. Siefert has disposed of Awatea Princess to a Suva sportsman and she will bo shipped from Auckland this month.
