ROAD IMPROVEMENT
LARGE TARANAKI SCHEME £50,000 LOAN PROPOSED POLL OF COUNTY RATEPAYERS [by telegraph —OWN correspondent] NEW PLYMOUTH, Saturday One of the largest single bitumen roading programmes ever undertaken by the Taranaki County Council is now proposed at a cost of £50,000. "When the preliminary details have been completed, a poll of the ratepayers will be taken.
It is proposed to surface about 56 miles of the county's roads. No secondary highways are included in the proposals, and, accordingly, no subsidy will be available. The roads which it is proposed to seal include all those carrying a large volume of traffic, so that if and when the work is done, there will be no important roads left unsealed in the county.
The council deferred consideration earlier in the year of a comprehensive sealing programme in view of the uncertainty about the county's future under the Government's amalgamation proposals. It is now considered that it will be economical to do the work and save the maintenance costs, because the roads are almost ready for sealing, almost no metalling or formation work being required. Before they are sealed, however, they will be brought up to modern standards.
