LITTLE THEATRE
SOCIETY PROPOSES RECESS EFFECT OF FINANCIAL LOSSES A proposal that the society should go into recess for the 1938 season will be discussed at the annual meeting of the Auckland Little Theatre Society next Thursday. In a special circular to members, the president, Mr. W. ,J. Crowther, states that it has become apparent that with its. present membership and scale of subscription the society ' cannot continue to function. However,, it is felt that the majority of members would be loth to see the society go out of existence. "For a number of years the society, which may' be regarded as the father of amateur dramatic efforts in Auckland, has not been making the necessary margin of profit," the circular continues. "The last two years have shown continuous losses in spite of strenuous efforts to effect economies. There are now almost 40 organisations operating, and the committee is convinced that this accounts for the . failure r of the society to recover the large membership which it enjoyed before the depression. "As a result of the increase in the number of productions, the society has not been able to maintain a satisfactory financial reserve. The number of productions exceeds the demand and to continue as in the past would require much-increased membership as well as a higher subscription to meet increasing costs."
