URBAN FARM LANDS
WHANGAREI VALUES £4O AN ACRE AS BASIS [I'ROM OUIt OWN corhk«pondknt] WHAUGAKEI, Wednesday A sitting of the Assessment Court under the Urban Farm Lands Eating Act, 1932, was held at Whangarei yesterday. Mr. G. N. Morris, S.M., presided, and associated with him were Messrs. R. H. Harrison and G. S. B. Morrison. Four objections to the valuation of their property by the Valuation Department were set down for hearing. Giving evidence as to the basis of the valuation of farm lan.d in the Whangarei borough, Mr. A. H. Farrell, Government Valuer, stated that £4O an acre • was taken a:t a base. It was found that with that basis a satisfactory result had been obtained. The average of £SO a cow .carrying capacity could, be taken -as tho value of the land round Whangarei. In the borough,* with average efficient management, the land could support ono cow to the acre. My. J. F. S. Briggs, who appeared for the Borough Council, remarked thai persons did . not buy land for farming in the borough on the productive value. Farming in tho area was more of a hobby for some of the business men of the town. A reduction was made by consent of tho parties in one case before the Court. Two other valuations were sustained and . another applicant did not appear.
