MANUREWA AFFAIRS

ROAD WORK SCHEMES / . - SWIMMING POOL PROJECT The acceptance of a tender to result face and seal Hill Road at a cost of £295 was reported by the Manure Borough Council on Tuesday night. The consulting engineer, Mr. R. P. Worlev, said it would be advisable to complete the work. He also submitted a schedule of work required on the Great South Road between Corin Avenue and Hill Road. It was decided to submit it to the Main Highways Board for approval .and authority for subsidy construction. Messrs. D. W. McNaughton and L. Butterworth raised the question of having a swimming pool provided in the district. Mr. Butterworth said the local school committee was prepared to co-operate with the council in raising funds, which might be subsidised.' A suggested site was in the vicinity of the Great South Road, where the contour of the ground and the presence of a bore would appreciably reduce costs. Mr. Butterworth said the council could sell, one of its reserve sites and apply the proceeds to the scheme. It was decidecf to ask the engineer to prepare approximate costs of the scheme. y The engineer said he had inspected a stratum of blue metal in the region of Brown's Road and found it was suitable for quarrying. He suggested that the council consider arranging for the quarrying to be done on contract with a view to supplying the prospective heavy needs of the district. It was decided to defer consideration.
