TRIALS ON GRASS

SOME SMART EFFORTS GAY SISTER WORKS WELL BEST SPRINT BY LUMINATE BY ABAYDOS Hie presence of the Tnkanini-trained Gay Sister, who registered the best mile and n-half, gave added interest to the grass trials at Epsom yesterday morning, ■when the track was in splendid order. The poles were out 85ft., but some smart times were recorded, humiliate showing the best half-mile in l.*, Marble Boy 1.7 3-5, and Gay Sister, 1.7 4-5, also did well. The maiden trotters Pink Lady and Pirate's Last shaped nicely in going 1.10. Lucky Love (W. 0. Willetts), Free Grattan (A. Cole), Gay Sister (O. 11. Goodall), Silver Watch (L. J, Mahoney), Handicapper (G. Stubbs), Bismuth (1). Cook) and Frank Best (J. McKendriek) went away from the mile and a-half, but Free Grattan and Silver Watch broke and lost a lot of ground. Lucky Love set a sound pace, but Gay Sister ran to the front at the mile in 2.25 and was first home in 3.33. Gay Sister, who met with a mishap a year ago, gave a fine display. She showed a rare turn of speed and did not appear to bo fully extended. Handicapper finished very resolutely to register 3.83 3-5, going the last half in 1.8 1-5. Lucky Love, who was third, paced solidly to record 3.34 4-5, the final section in 1.9 3-5. Frank Best and Bismuth, who wore slow in the early stages, ran tlio last half in 1.9 2-5. i Marble Boy Goes Nicely Marble Boy (C. G. Lee) led out from Bedford (F. Herring, jun.) from tlio mile and a-half, Luminate (J. E. Seagar) going a little over four seconds behind and beating them home in 3.39 1-5. Luminute went the last halfmile in 1.7 and infused dash into his work. Marble Boy fought on gamely and went 3.43 3-5, the last half in 1.7 3-5 being a pleasing effort for one of his class. Bedford registered 1.8 1-5 for the final half-mile. Worthy Quest (G. li. Stubbs) and Jewel Crest (W. C. Willetts) began from the mile and a-half a couple of seconds ahead of Great Chum (S. M. August), who was free-legged. There was little between them at the mile in 2.37, but Great Chum broke as ho went to take charge at tho distance and Jewel Crest just shaded Worthy Quest in 3.48. Jewel Crest went resolutely when pressed. Worthy Quest was staying on and is improving. Great Chum regained his balance to run the last half-mile in ] .12 2-5. Tangaroa (C. G. Lee) took 2.37 3-5 to run the first of two miles, improving to 2.28 1-5 for the second and to 1.12 1-5 for the last half-mile. Dick Redmond (A. T. Newdiek), ■who left his feet in tho first six furlongs, took 3.58 to complete a mile and a-half. Anthony's Gift (W. Olive) showed speed in going the first half of a mile in 1.10, but failed to go better than 2.27. Queen Potts (S. M. August) completed a mile and a-quarter in 3.17 without being bustled. Kewpie's Queen Pleases After going tho first two furlongs of a mile and a-half, Red Eagle (J. Gee) and Top Hand (S. M. August) were joined by Kewpie's Queen (G. Hutter), but with a round covered Bed Eagle broke and dropped back. Vigorously driven, Kewpie's Queen got up to win narrowly in 3.10, going solidly over tho last half in 1.9. Top Hand ran the final half-mile .in 1.8 4-5 and the mile and a-holf in 3.51 1-5. Red Eagle broke again at the end of a mile and a-quarter and was pulled up. Pirate's Last (L. J. Mahonev), Pink Lady (B. Dyer) and Gold Kip (W. C. Willetts) left the mile and a-half as named. Pink Lady finishing in front in 3.43. Pirate's Last, who broke at tho seven furlongs, was only a head away at the finish in 3.43, going 1.10 for the last half. Pink Lady went solidly all the way.

Gold Kip made a couple of breaks, but later trotted a mile and a-quarter in 3.10, tho last half in, 1.13. He was accompanied part of the way by Floral Huon (W. Olive), who took 1.19 for a half. Tommy McElwyn (A. McKenzie) and Kewpie's Bingen (H. McNaughton) left the mile and a-quarter a second ahead of Audo Patch (C. G. Lee), who was followed two seconds later by Marcus (A. Bryce). Audo Patch broke early and Tommy McElwyn retired at the top, Kewpie's Bingen leading until ho tangled near the finish and left Marcus to win in 3.2. Marcus finished resolutely to record ].9 for the last half-mile, and is improving. Kewpie's Bingen registered 3.5 1-5 and Tommy McElwyn took 3.7 2-5. Audo Patch was sent two miles later and trotted without mistake to record 4.57, the third half in 1.11 being Jiis fastest section. 1 Kaitawa Improves Kaitawa (J. Gee) went away four seconds before Kewpie's Crest (W. Gee) from the mile and a-half, Gipsy Light (A. Cole) joining the leader at the mile and a-quarter. Kewpie's Crest made up leeway quickly and reached the front at the mile in 2.26, with Gipsy Light handy. In the run home Kaitawa came fast to win in 3.39. Kaitawa went tho last half in 1.9 and showed improvement by finishing 011 solidly. Once lie reached tlie lead, Kewpie's Crest slackened, but made another effort when Kaitawa passed him and recorded 3.3 C. Gipsy Light ran her mile and a-quarter in 3.2, the last half in 1.11 3-5. Argolis (S. M. August), who was unhoppled, led Petite .Jewel (W. H. Andrews) from the mile and a-half, Native Fern (YV. Fleming) and John's Last (l'\ Herring,' jun.) going away ahead as the others approached tho mile and a-qunrter, .Argolis broke after reaching the mile in 2.31, and at the turn Petite Jewel ran past John's Last and Native Fern to win very easily in 3.12. Petite Jewel was always going smoothly and is a very promising novice. John's Last inn his mile and a-quarter in 3.7. finishing hotter than Native Fern. After he settled down Argolis showed fine, speed in running the last quarter a shade better than Is. Parrish Belle (C. G. Lee) trotted faultlessly over two miles in 4.59. Agnes Bingen (I). O. JonesL after going a' half in 1.13 and the next quarter in 33 3-ss, broke before completing a mile and was pulled up. On the dirt, tragic Great Sonoma (W. C. Willetts) trotted a mile and a-half in 3.26 and was tiring at the finish after going the first mile in 2.16. Great Sonoma may race on Monday. Munga Tangi (L. Lnver) went two miles in 4..'59 3-5. The first mile took 2.2.'5 and the Inst half-mile 1.5 .1-5. The grass track will he available tomorrow morning from 6 to 11 and the starter, Mr. J. Gavin, will be in attendance at 8 o'clock to give novices barrier practice.
