The October Handicap has been tightened from 3.33 to 3,30 and the only one engaged who ran last year is , Proletarian, who was third to Tollgate and General Sarsfield, and won the Campbell Handicap the second day. Frank Best, now on 3.29, ran second in the maiden event a year ago, while Munga Tangi and Kewpie's Crest were unplaced off 3/36 and 3.35 respectively. Progress of Kenworthy Keuworthy, who is a candidate for the Jellicoe Handicap, has made rapid progress since last Labour Day, when he ran second in the Junction Handicap oft 3.38 to Great Jewel. In a year Kcnworihy has come from 4.54 to 4.36 in -two miles.. Kewpie's one of the favourites for the Jellicoe Handicap, commenced last- season on 4.18 and without winning at two miles has reached 4.35. A few months ago Our McKinncy was on 4.40, hut by consistent efforts has come back to 4.32. A great feature of the first day last year was tho record put up. by F. J. Smith, who, with eight drives, scored six firsts, a second and a third. His successful horses were Swordsman, Nervie's Last, Spessiva, Polly Pan, Tollgate and Mountain Flight, King's Warrior being second and Frank Best third. In marked contrast was his second-dav performance of going th rough the day without a win. Starting times for Saturday are as follows: —12 noon Waitemata Handicap, 12.40 Improvers' Handicap, 1.30 Jellicoe Handicap, 2.10 Parnell Handicap, 2.50 Mountain Handicap, 3.30 October Handicap, 4.10 Stewards' Handicap, and 4.55 Electric Handicap.

\ HAWKE'S BAY TROTTERS v ARRIVAL AT EPSOM The Hawke's Bay trotting trainer, J. A. Gerrard, was a spectator at Epsom yesterday morning, as his trotters, All Bingen and Native Tree, did not arrive until last night. All Bingen is a maiden, who will have' his first race on Saturday. Native Tree won at Cambridge two years ago, and after being successful last season at' Wanganui and Hawera, won the Stewards' Handicap at tho Auckland winter meeting- Although she has done best 011 yielding tracks, Native Tree can also go well on firm going.
