FRENCH CLUB'S WORK

ANNUAL MEETING HELD CONSUL PRESENTS PRIZES The annual meeting of the Auckland French Club was held on Moriel ay evening in the rooms of the Penwomen's League. Mr. G. S. Coldham presided over a good attendance. The report showed that a full season of activities had heen successfully carried through, and a high standard had been maintained in the programmes suhmitted at the monthly meetings, French talks and comedies liaving been prominent features. A tribute was paid to the work of the former president of honour, Monsieur Edouard Joubert, and regret was expressed that serious illness had caused him to relinquish his Consular duties in New Zealand. The balance sheet showed that the club was in a sound financial position. A welcome was extended bv the president to Monsieur Edmond Meyer, the newlv-appointed French Consul, who gave a short address in acknowledgement. The Consul presented to Mr. G. S. Coldham the bronze medal of the Alliance Francaise, awarded in recognition of his services to the language. Various prizes won during the year were also presented by the Consul. Prizes donated by Monsieur Joubert for the leading members of the club s conversation class were won by Mrs. M. M Briscoe and Mr. N. B. Body. •Prizes'given by the Alliance Francaise for competition among pupils of secondarv schools in French reading, dictation and conversation were won by Arthur 1. McCutchan (Auckland Granimar School), and Dora Margaret Kipling (Auckland Girls' Grammar School). Certificates of merit were awarded to the following:—Joan Mascull (Epsom Girls' Grammar School), Harriet Waring, Patricia Walton (Auckland. Girls' Grammar School), "William K. 1. Fowler (Auckland Grammar School). The season was brought to a close bv the presentation of three short French comedies, "Un Peu do It epos, "Au Cinema" and "I/O Grelot, successfully produced by Madame U Allen and members of the conversation class Parts were taken by Mesdames L. Allen and M. M. Briscoe; Misses B. Carr, N. Eady, J. C. Fordyce and J. Wells, Messrs. N. B. Bodv, P. F • E-mail S. M. Y. Hamlin, P. G. Coldham?E. T. Aickin, M. Hall, C. Reid and C. Belshaw. .
