ASSOCIATION GAME
ENGLISH TROPHY MATCHES QUESTION OF EXPENSES The co§t to the association holding the English trophy in meeting challengers was discussed at a meeting of the control board of the Auckland Football Asociation last evening. It was pointed out that the holder had to meet the full expenses of the -travelling team, which were often considerable. Canterbury had lost financially in defending the trojphy against Wellington and Otago, while Auckland had had a similar experience. It was decided to support the Canterbury association in any action it might take in recommending that the New Zealand Council take control of the competition. It was felt that the competition should be conducted on similar lines to the Flunket Shield cricket competition. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect to the late Dr. N. McDougall, who was for many years chairman of the control board and who was a life member of the association.' Mr. W. Walker reported on the visit of the Auckland side to Canterbury for the English trophy match. He paid a tribute to the hospitality of the Canterbury officials. The successfnl visit to Rotorua of a fifth grade representative team was reported upon by Mr. G. C. Ballantyne, who stated that the game was progressing among the Maoris of that district.
