AUCKLAND'S WEATHER VERY LITTLE RAINFALL FEATURES OF THE MONTH Exceptionally little rain foil in Auckland last month, the total being only about one-third of the average for August, according to the report of Mr. ft. M. Yallop, official Government, observer. This was in distinct contrast with August of last year, when nearly twice the average rainfall for this period was recorded, 'J ho total rainfall last month was 1.52 in., compared with S.Tlin. in the same month last year, and, as against tlio IS days on which rain foil then, only 13 days were wet this August. The maximum fall was only O.lOin. on August 3, compared with 2.98 in. on August 21 a year ago and 0.96 two years ago.

There was also plenty of sunshinelast month, and for eight days on end large sunshine recordings were experienced. There were only three days without sunshine, and the total amount was 183 hours 6 minutes, well above the 155 hours 24 minutes for August, 1936, and the 129 hours 54 minutes for August, 1935. The sunniest day was August 28, when 10 hours 12 minutes were experienced, compared with 9 hours 36 minutes on the sunniest day in August of last year.

The mean maximum temperature in the shade for the past month was 55.20deg., compared with 58.75deg. in August, 1936. The mean minimum was 46.10deg., as against 47.42deg., and the mean temperature for tho month was 50.70deg., compared with 63.08deg. Tho extreme maximum temperature of 61.4deg. was recorded on August 28 and on August 15 tho extreme minimum of 39.6deg. The lowest grass reading was 32.5deg., also on August 15. No frosts were recorded in Albert Park, although several were experienced in the suburbs, anu there were fogs on four days during the month. Barometric pressures were maintained at a high average. The mean for the month was 30.137 in., as against 30.00.'3 in. for August of last year; the maximum, on August 12 and 14, was 30.452 in., compared with tho best recording of 30.429iu. a year ago; and tho minimum was 29.631 on August 31. as against 29.610 on August 31, 1936. General remarks by Mr. Yallop state that August tvas a month of rather extreme changes of temperature. Winds were variable, but a southerly tendency predominated. There was "dew on 10 mornings.
