QUESTIONED BY JAPANESE VESSEL ALLOWED TO PASS (Received Xugusl 20, 5.5 p.m.) SHANGHAI. August 20 ' It was reported yesterday that the Japanese had stopped the British steamer Shenking, off Woosung, and that the British Admiral had protested and asked for an explanation. The report has been denied, however, by both the British and Japanese naval
authorities. It is explained that a Japanese warship signalled the Shenking and allowed her to pass when .she disclosed her identity. The British Naval authorities have chartered the Shenking to assist in the evacuation of Shanghai and to bring naval and military supplies Irom Hongkong. A Japanese / spokesman, further referring to the blockade, said Japan would not interfere with foreign shipping, even when it was carrying arms.
