MAJOR OFFENSIVE PLANNED
LAUNCHING WITHIN THREE DAYS FORMIDABLE CHINESE DEFENCES (Received August 29, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, August 28 Despatches from Shanghai state that, according to a Japanese spokesman, a major offensive will be launched withm three days. The spokesman estimated that there were 96,000 Chinese confronting the Japanese forces, for which reason more reinforcements had been landed. , , Foreign observers confirm the fact that the Chinese regulars have withdrawn from the outer boundary of the foreign areas and been replaced by militia. The Chinese Army spokesman denied a report that the troops were withdrawing to a line 35 miles from Shanghai. He said the withdrawal would be at most two milCS Other reports are that the Chinese are forming an impregnable "Hindenburg Line. _ The British United Press correspondent says the Chinese admit the greatest difficulty in stemming the Japanese advance from Woosung. There were heavy Chinese casualties near Lo len.
