BEAT CHINA TO KNEES
YEAR'S CAMPAIGN ANTICIPATED JAPANESE RECALL TO COLOURS (Received August 29, 5.5 p.m.) SHANGHAI. August 28 Reports received in Shanghai state that the Prime Minister of Japan, Prince Konoye, declares that the situation in China has made diplomatic negotiations with Nanking impossible. He states that the best course is to beat China to her knees, so that she will no longer have spirit to fight. The Japanese admit that the Chinese, in spite of lack of heavy guns, are fighting most bravely, and they envisage a year s campaign. Twenty retired Japanese generals have been recalled to the colours and thousands of reservists are being called up.
