PROVINCIAL GAMES

HAWKE'S BAY DEFEATED FIRST LOSS OF THE SEASON TARANAKI TEAM SUCCESSFUL [BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION*] NAPIER, Sunday For the first time this season Hawke's Bay tasted defeat when it went down to Tarnnaki by 15 points to 9. It was a clear-eut win, victory going to the better side on the day. Conditions were ideal, the ground.being in excellent order, and there was only tlie faintest suggestion of a breeze, while a thick layer of cloud obscured the sun. Hawke's Bay was penalised in front of the posts and just outside the twenty-five. Boss' kick, however, sent the ball outside. Tarnnaki maintained the pressure and a brilliant forward movement brought success, Longstaff taking a pass from Fowler near the line to sprint across. Ross' kick failed. Matters looked decidedly gloomy for Hawke's Hay when repeated movements by the fast Taranaki pack threatened to bring trouble, but somehow the home team managed to stave off disaster. The ball came in from the'line-out to Johnson, who went over for a try. Johnson's kick failed. Hawke's Bay suffered a severe loss when White was injured and left the field. Bustling Hawke's Bay into errors, Taranaki, again worked down, and Ross kicked a penalty goal. An injury to Clothier brought, further ill-luck, (tie half having to leave the field. His place was taken by Reid. Then nunc an effort which would have done credit to the All Black, J. Mill. A- scrum went down inside Taranaki's twenty-five. Hawke's Bay hooked cleanly. Reid flash round 011 the blind side to dive over after a spectacular effort. From a scrum 011 the Hawke's Bay line Burko crossed for a good try. Ross' kick failed. I'lay quickly moved to the- Hawke's Bay twenty-five, where several Taranaki forwards handled before Fowler crossed well out. Ross again failed. Hawke's Bay lost Hevine through injuries. A minute later, and amid tremendous enthusiasm from the crowd, the All Black, T. Reid, came on. A weak attempt by Bradley to clear from his own twenty-five saw tho ball fielded *by Hunter, who ran strongly, and Bourke and Ross handled for the latter to cross. Ross' kick failed, and the whistlo sounded almost immediately with the score:—Taranaki, 15: Hawkes Bay, 0. TOURING TEAM DEFEATED VICTORY FOR MANAWATU [BV TELEGRAPH —PHKSS ASSOCIATION*] PALMERSTON NORTH, Sunday Scoring their third successive win, tho Manawatu Rugby representatives defeated North Otago by 17 points to 8 yesterday before a large attendance and in brilliant sunshine. In spite of tho extremely erratic handling throughout, Manawatu's backs wero able to penetrato the visitors' defenco convincingly enough, thanks to fine openings made by J. Finlay, the second five-eighths. Even more, however, was victory due to supremacy of the forwards, who dominated the game in tho loose and in scrums, and line-outs secured possession on the majority of occasions. Their share in the gamo was indicated by tho fact that the forwards scored four of Manawatu's five tries. R. M. McKenzie, the All Black forward and Manawatu captain, played a particularly fine game, completing two movements by scoring after the backs had handled, tell, another tall forward, played excellently, also scoring two tries. The remaining ono was secured by Buick, who alsq converted one try. Had tho home side's passing been more efficient the score would have been greater. North Otago was handicapped by the fart that it had the lightest pack it has fielded for years. They owe much to S. Easton,. tho fullback, who, in addition to scoring five points" by kicking a penalty goal and converting his side's only, try, made numerous saves and kicked unerringly to touch. His- kick from the sideline to convert a try scored by J. Easton, a forward, was applauded as a perfect effort. It was the first game of tho visitors northern tour, while for Manawatu it was the last . before their own northern tour. Of eight matches played so far this season. Manawatu's only defeats wero' by tho Springboks and Hawke's Bay. SUPERIOR BACK PLAY CANTERBURY BEATS SOUTHLAND [BT TEI/EGBATK —PRESS ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCHURCH. Sunday Unable to counter the brilliant thrusts by the homo team's backs, Southland was beaten bv Canterbury yesterday afternoon by 19 points to 7. It was fast, open football on a drv ground. Thero was no question or Canterbury's superiority in thrust among the backs, who made alt the openings from which scores came. The best wero Hooper, the All Black, and K. S. Mortlock, who the previous Saturday was not chosen to play ag Ca n nlerbu e ry SP lcd gb at half-time, but in the second spell Southland showed more pnfernrise and defended much more effee tivelv It must be mentioned that on'y seven members of tho team which won the Ranforty Shield from Otago played for Southland 1 .yesterday, and tfiese r r e t a"k would m hive 8 been g difllcult indeed had Southla^he be mat a cV wis U nT Remarkable for out- . 1 ' fnrlvnrd nlav The packs were well Hlri •W S.ltoriwd ."red .. »«- converted try. WELLINGTON BEATS OTAGO TWELVE POINTS AGAINST SIX fur TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION*] WELLINGTON, Sunday Tn a mediocre match, much below the i Finland standard of inter-provin-USU i football Wellington boat Otago nl? dry ground at Athletic Park by attacking constantly, with an advantage u both scrums and line-out . o . The sensational penalty goal with which Taylor opened tho match gave a false impression that it would bo an exciting one, but a long and tedious period of scrappy forward play occupied practically the whole of tho first half. O'Halloran played a lino game for Wellington. Lambourno was outhooking Lancy and tho halfback 'was consequently able to make tho most of an ablo line of backs: The handling, however, was uncertain and tho tackling was poor on both sides. Griffiths was not playing his usual game,' ' but tho wingers, "Wright and Bums, both showed up repeatedly through being frequently unmarked by opponents. Tho fullback, Crisp, kicked inaccurately, in contrast to the regularity with which Griffiths, and Taylor on tho other side,, found tho touchline: Of tho Otaiyo players, Taylor was most outstanding, his sound defence preventing Wellington from running up a much higher score. Not once throughout the nfternoon did the Otago backs mako a successful or spectacular movement. Berghan showed himself lo bo a useful five-eighths, and, when given the opportunity, he made several fine solo dashes. Tho halfback, Howden, played a sound gamo. also breaking round tho scrum with marked effect. Of the pack, Nieper and Laney wero the most prominent. The heavy Wellington forwards, Guy, Ongley, FraseTSmith and Lambourne. however, gave tho Otago pack little chance to shine. In the second spell Wellington showed strong superiority and improved back combination. The Otago scruin, by breaking up fast several times, smothered menacing movements. O'Halloran's dropped goal was a brilliant one at a time when Otago's defence was at its strongest. When Churchill retired injured, Trevathan, tho All Black five-eighths, took his place, and received nn ovation from the crowd. Beyond a singlo spectacular dash up the line, however, Trevathan had little opportunity of improving the situation. _ WELLINGTON B TEAM SUCCESS OVER MARLBOROUGH [BV TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION*] BLENHEIM, Sunday By 15 points to 8 the Wellington B representatives defeated Marlborough yesterday afternoon in the homo province's last intcrprovincial fixture for tho season. Tho visitors showed superiority for the major part of the game, particularly in the first-spell, in which they led by 12 points to 8, hut in the second half tho homo team rallied well and brought off many dangerous forward rushes which had Wellington hard pressed. Toward the end of the game Wellington again had tho better of play, adding a try just as time was called. The football was generally not up to good inter-provincial standard, although the conditions wero almost perfect, the weather and ground being ideal ufter heavy rain during the previous night. Wellington's first try came 10 minutes after the gamo started, when Gillespie, on the wing, evaded two tackles and sent an in-pass to Todd, who scored. Shortly afterward Mellish succeeded with a penalty kick for Marlborough, but Wellington was ahead again when Gillespie ran round to pass to his other winger. Burns, who had a clear run in. Wellington's next try came when the backs handled from a scrum and Love cut-in nicely to pass on to Bums, who scored in the corner. Marlborough brought its score to within a point difference when O'Rourko cut-in after a passing rush by the backs and made an opening for Bartlett to run round for a try, which Mellish converted. Just before half-time Gillespio completed another rush by the Wellington backs with a try in the corner, and the spell ended in Wellington's favour, 12 —8. The second spell was much more evenly contested and for a long time Marlborough was pressing near the visitors' line, but was unable to produce the necessary finishing touch. Just on time Sargisson, who had replaced Gillespie when the latter was injured, received the ball at the end of a passing rush started in Marlborough's twentyfive and scored, tho gamo ending with the score:—Wellington B, 15; Marlborough, 8. SEDDON SHIELD MATCH BULLER WITHSTANDS CHALLENGE [BT TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION*] WESTPORT, Sunday In ideal weather conditions and before a large gathering, Buller withstood its second challenge this season for the Seddon Shield, defeating Golden Bay-Motueka by 31 points to 10. Buller was always on top, the forwards outplaying the opposition and the backs handling with greater accuracy in numerous bright back movements. The visiting forwards made several concerted rushes, but found Buller's defenco difficult to penetrate, while the passing of the Golden Bay backs usually lacked certainty. Buller's score camo from tries by Mason. Finlayson (2), Hill (2), Stewart, Butterfield and Lake, Stewart converting one try. G. Orman also converted one and kicked a penalty goal. Ryder and Foster-Barham scored for the visitors, Lunn converting both tries. PLAYERS TRANSFERRED [BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION'] WESTPORT, Sunday Buller is to lose two of its Rugby representatives, G. Orman, well-known hooker, who played a great game yesterday both as hooker and in tho open and twice kicked goals, and J. Hill, wing-thrcequarter. Both have accepted employment in Greymouth.
