WINTER SHOW

SUCCESS REPORTED

DISMANTLING WORK IN HAND CLEARANCE OF WHARF SHEDS Dismantling tho Auckland Winter Exhibition is a comparatively quick contract that was set in motion with tho closng of doors to the public on Saturday night, after an eminently 'Successful season, during which greater takings were received from larger attendances in comparison with figures for recent years. Workmen will he almost continuously engaged until tonight, when it js expected that the four Auckland Harbour Board sheds on Central Wharf will have been cleared of exhibits and ready for a continuation of their legitimate purposo.

When tho final largo crowd of visitors to tho exhibition had left tho premises on Saturday night, workmen went right ahead with their task of dismantling tho conipotitivo sections in shed 12, Over 13000 exhibits required handling, repacking and readdressing, and thoy will all bo ready for immediate despatch by road, rail and mail this morning. Stalls and other structures have also been removed to permit use of the shed by mid-tiny. Industry will bo at its height in tho shods this morning, when about 1000 persons in various capacities will bo engaged at tho show, and it is expected that thoro will bo a heavy demand for carriers to deliver goods for exhibitors. Among the workers will bo a largo staff of carpenters, who in a fow hours will dismantle about 50,000 ft, of timber and about 10 tons of corrugated iron from temporary structures. About .'IOOO electric lamps also have to bo packed away for future use. > Tho amusement area was practically cleared yesterday, "Increased labour costs produced an extra item of about £l5O for tho exhibition authorities to pay this year," said -Mr. W. l'\ O'Donnell, manager of tho exhibition, yesterday. "Carpenters' wages this year were 2s 9d an hour, compared with 2s 4Jd an hour last year, in addition to which materials nave cost more. The exhibition . has been a great success, however," Mr. O'Donnell added, "and I feel sure tho Auckland public has appreciated our efforts." FUTURE POSSIBILITIES EASTER CARNIVAL PROJECT BUILDING AT EPSOM PROPOSED Future possibility of an Easter carnival under the control of the Auckland Agricultural and Pastoral Association at the Epsom Show Grounds, in order to combine tho annual Winter Exhibition with outdoor attractions, was discussed yesterday by Mr. W. F. O'Donnell, managing secretary of tho association. He said that the purely indoor show, had lost popularity, and was not now the most profitable typo of fixture. Both indoor and outdoor attractions were in demand, although proximity to tho city was not essential. A proposal to erect a largo building at the show grounds to accommodate tho association's annual winter show was under consideration, Mr. O'Donnell said. There was a growing need for such a building, which could be erected at a reasonable cost. Overhead expenditure Would bo reduced, and tho show could be placed on a sounder ecothan if a suitable building Were'lor, ected in the city. Modern trends in show organisation were.toward a combination of facilities for indoor and outdoor competitions, Mr. O'Donnell continued. If tho suggested carnival were adopted, there would be a variety of displays both day and night. In addition to exhibits and trade displays, there would bo side-shows and sports, including wrestling and boxing tournaments, racing and trotting events, football and other games in the show ring. The carnival would bo spread over a week or 10 days.
