Stilwell, S.M., in tho Magistrate's Court with establishing a lottery. Detective-Sergeant Dovle said that about a week before the publication of the competition two of the men were interviewed by a member of the staff of a certain paper and were advised that the contest would bo legal with minor alterations, and if they could provide tho paper with good references as to their personal character the paper would publish tho details of the contest. The net profit made by each man was £2 9s Bd. There was no suggestion that they were not honest, but they had committed a definite breach of tho Gaming Act. The magistrate took tho view that the offence was not a serious breach of the Act, but a technical one. He took it that next time the men would first consult a member of the legal profession.
