TIME COMPARISONS AUGUST HANDICAP HORSES While there is a wide margin between the best two-miles records of the horses in the August Handicap, due mainly to the variation in" track conditions, there is not a great deal between them at a mile and a-half. The main feature is that Nervie's Last has tho best performances at both distances, having registered 3.16 3-5 for a mile and a-half at Asliburton and 4.21 1-5 for two miles at Addington. Moreover, he also has the fastest § winning performance for two miles on a grass track, having won at Epsom in 4.26 4-5.. Tho next best. at both distances is Lady Fame,; who has, recorded 3.17 1-5 and *4.30 on dirt tracks, but when she ran third to Star, Pronto and Lucky Jack in tho Otahuhu Handicap she went 4:36 1-5. Star Pronto lias Avon in 4.36 3-5, but on another occasion, after breaking in the straight, he finished fourth in, 4.30. He has also a mile and a-half record of 3.19 3-5, time, ho has also bettered when running fourth. Ironside, who registered 3.18 3-5 at Epsom for a mile and a-lialf, has twice recorded 4.31 3-5 for two miles, a winning effort at Wangauui. Our McKinncy, \vlio has bettered 3.22 for a mile and a-half on four occasions, has the slowest record at two miles, but his wins and placings were registered on heavy tracks. His best two miles is 4.40.

Kewpie's King has not won at two miles, but he has succeeded at a mile and five furlongs and last season took a record of 3.21 3-5 for a mile and a-half. By Blue Mountain King froin Kewpie, lie" is bred to stay and 'rnny prove good at the distance. , j Following are the best times of tho runners, with their present two-miles handicaps;—

CASE OF MIRZA 11. SUPPORTERS COULD NOT WIN A rule of the Betting Control Board in England stipulates that when 90 per cent of the pool is invested on tho winner; investors shall receive their money back. Tho rule was enforced when the champion two-year-old of the year in England, Mir/.a 11. won tho July Stakes at Newmarket. A correspondent of Sporting Life, London, points out that had Mir/.a 11. been beaten, there would iiavo been no -refund and therefore, while supporters of tho favourite could not have won, they could have lost their 'stakes, which is contrary to the cardinal principle of betting. The writer suggested that when more than 00 per, cent of tho pool is invested on any ono horse, all bets bo refunded in full. .Desert Gold and Gloaming are tho only gallopers to have paid less than tho investments of successful supporters in .New Zealand, the total amount on the other runners being insufficient to pay totalisator deductions and leave a balance to profit. Since the adoption of win-and-place betting, however, a few horses have returned less than tlio stake to place supporters.
