SHOPKEEPERS FINED ASSERTION BY DEFENDANT An assertion that the police would never prevent trading in prohibited goods on Sunday was niado in tho Police Court yesterday by James Turner, shopkeeper, who admitted a summons charge of illegal Sunday trading. Defendant said he was a returned soldier, and bad to keep his shop open seven days a week to make a living, which was better than being on sustenance. "I know I have been breaking tho law but I am not taking an attitude of defiance," defendant added. Sub-Inspector Fox said a recent defendant had twice adopted a similar attitude to Turner, and had been fined the maximum penalty of £5 on each occasion. - , . . Mr. C. Orr Walker, S.M., advised defendant to observe the law unless ho was prepared to go on paying fines until he was forced out of business. Defendant was fined £1 and costs, 10s. Similar fines wore imposed on tho following for similar ofßences: Albany Dowling, Andrew Hammond, Alexander Moir, Alexander Ridgway and Amelia Shaw. Frederick George Voss was fined 10s and costs, 3s.
