CITY MARKETS
CORROSION OF ROOF COST OF REPLACEMENT The fact that serious corrosion has taken place Oil the iron roofing and other parts of the City Markets was mentioned in a letter from fivo produce firms received by tho City Council last night. Tho opinion was expressed that the damage was duo to some substance emanating from tho plant in operation at the Tepid Baths. Tho city engineer, Mr. J. Tyler, reported that there was corrosion on tho roof iron of tho Tepid Baths, partly caused through salt water spray from the aerating plant and also by natural causes. Tho roofing iron on adjoining buildings, including the City Markets, showed signs of corrosion, which was mainly caused by natural conditions, and continuous salt water spray or moisture from tho harbour. Tho storage of manures and tho gas or dust from them also had a tendency to affect the roof iron. Tho corrosion of tho City Markets roof therefore was not wholly caused through tho Topid Baths plant. , - , ~ The council docided to reply that it would bo a rcasonablo compromise if tho lessor and lessees of tho building equally shared tho cost of new iron.
