SOUTH WESTLAND PORT

CABINET'S APPROVAL CONSTRUCTION OF HARBOUR DISTRICT'S RICH RESOURCES [by telegraph—OWN* correspondent] GEEYMOUTH, Thursday Word was received to-day that the Cabinet has approved of the construction of a harbour at Jackson's Bay, South Westland, about 200 miles south of Hokitika. This will open up probably the greatest remaining area of timber in the Dominion. Although few details of the scheme have yet been disclosed, it is understood that a jetty is to be constructed in the harbour which, owing to its deepness, will accommodate large vessels. Tho harbour is capacious and well sheltered, being open to tho wind in only one quarter. The project will facilitate the work of road construction to link up with the southern provinces, and will open up the pastoral country in Westland County and South Westland. At present Jackson's Bay can bo reached only by a bridlo track from the road head at Bruce Bay. According to reliable estimates there are 65,000 ft. of timber to the acre in areas near Jackson's Bay. A great proportion consists of white pine, while other timbers well represented are rimu, totara and silver pine. Many varieties of minerals are located in the district. It is pointed out that the scheme is the most auspicious development in the history of the far southern district.
