LABOUR UNDECIDED

CITY COUNCIL IMPASSE BUS STATION STAFFING An unusual division of opinion among tho Labour members of the City Council occurred at the meeting last night, when a proposal was put forward by the Legal and By-laws Committee that applications be called for the position of supervisor of the new municipal transport station at a salary of £320 a year, and that tho committee be given power to make tho appointment. It was explained that there was need for haste in making the appointment, as it was proposed to open the station about September 11. and a manager would be necessary from tho beginning. There seemed to bo a general lack of agreement among the Labour members whether the committee should be given this power, or the council should preserve its right to make such appointments. There was also a suggestion that the traffic department should supervise tho station as part of its normal functions, but it was pointed out that at present there was not sufficient staff to make it possible to detail men for the work. It was also stated that provision had been made in the estimates for tho running of the station for an expenditure of £750 a yeur for staffing and that this would be borne b.v the transport operators using tho station. Several amendments wore dealt with, the outcome being that ho decision was reached, tho Legal and By-laws committee oeing left to control the station and make tho necessary arrangements for staffing during the first weeks of operation.
