JUSTICES OF PEACE
ANNUAL REUNION VISITORS FROM COUNTRY A social evening in honour of country justices of the peace, who are visiting Auckland for show week, was given by members of the Auckland Justices of the Peace Association in the Farmers' Trading Company tearooms last night. An annual event, this is one which is welcomed by Auckland justices as an opportunity of meeting those from the country. The tables in the tearooms were arranged in long tiers.- They were attractively decorated with vases of daffodils and Iceland poppies. A musical programme was presented, comprising songs by Mrs. H. T. King, Miss Mavis Beadle and Mr. J. McDougall, and flute solos by Mr. H. McLennan. Mrs. W. H. McKinney was the accompanist. Several toasts were honoured and the presentation of a chiming clock was made to Mr. V. A. Coyle, pastpresident of the association. On arrival the guests were received by Mr. J. B. Paterson, president of the association, and by Mrs. Paterson, who was wearing a frock of ice-blue panne velvet with a black and white coatee. In a brief address Mr. Paterson welcomed the visitors, and particularlv the new justices, both men and women, whoso appointments had been announced last month. He referred to several members of the association who had died and others who had suffered bereavements, all present standing in silence for a few moments. An historical survey of the existence of justices of the peace was given by Mr. G. Cruickshank, who briefly outlined tho changes in their duties made since their inception 600 years ago. He also gave instances of the power of a justice of the peace in helping to preserve the peace. Among those present were:—The Hon. Mrs. N. M. Molesworth, J.P., Mrs. F. Mcßridc, J.P., Mrs. J. K.
