CHILI) IN MILKING SHED WHIRLED ROUND SHAFTING LOOP OF TWINE TIED TO THUMB [by telegraph—own corhespondkn-t] DARGAVILLE, Thursday Fatal injuries were received by Gordon Harry Groome, the five-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. P. N. Groome, of Aoroa, shortly after eight o'clock this morning, when lie was caught in machinery in a cowshed. Mr. Groome was working in the shed at the time, with the assistance of Mr. C. F. Walters, when they heard thumping sounds from the engineroom. Mr. Groome rushed out and found his son being whirled around the shafting. A doctor was called, and after the child's injuries had been dressed, he was taken to the Northern Wairoa Hospital, but died on the way. The accident appeared to - have occurred through the end of a length of binder-twine with which the boy had been playing becoming wound round the shafting, the other end being fastened to one of his thumbs. When the boy was picked up by his father the loop of twine was still wound" 'round the thumb. At an inquest held later before the district coroner, Mr. J. A. McLean, a verdict was given that death was caused by shock and lacerations to the brain received when the child was caught in the shafting of the machinery. - ' *
