WHARF LABOUR
THE BUREAU SYSTEM
OPENING ON WEDNESDAY MANY SHIPS EXPECTED Delayed since the beginning of July for a full agreement to be reached in Wellington, the opening of the Auckland waterfront labour bureau will take place on Wednesday. Organisation at the bureau office on Central Wharf is ready for the new system, which will eliminate the old "auction block method of selecting men for-work on the wharves. It is probable that the bureau will receive a severe testing immediately it is opened. Shipping schedules ,at present show that five overseas vessels will, be in port on Wednesday and they will bo augmented by a further six on Thursday. . Almost a peak period will therefor* be experienced at the changeover from the old system to the new. A. wido range of cargoes will be handled on Thursday. The Port Adelaide and the City of Glasgow are due from the south for final loading, and general cargo will be discharged by the Ardenvohr, from Montreal, the Wairuna, • from Vancouver, the Rangitane, from London, via Wellington, and the Port Brisbane, from New York. Shipping company managers are unanimous that, providing suitable men are selected and that the plan is accepted in the right spirit, the system will be an outstanding success. The men welcome it as a measure for the more equal distribution of labour, as well as a means of removing many other sources of dissatisfaction.
