PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP HOLDSWORTH WINS SEMI-FINAL The second semi-final of tho Auckland provincial amateur billiards championship for the Billiards,4 Limited, Shield, was played last evening at Messrs. Billiards, Limited, showrooms. L. F. W. Hoidsworth, a former New Zealand champion, defeating T. Tierney. Hoidsworth quickly found (ouch and his first break was an excellent, one of GO. Tierney also settled down to his game and a break of 30 resulted. At Tierney's next visit ho excelled In a splendid effort of 79, He followed with two breaks of 3<l and gained a lead of over 100. Hoidsworth gained ground with well-played runs of 37 and 27. The scores at this stage were 187 to 349, in favour of Tierney. A -break of 21 was Tierney's next effort. Tho scoring up to this stage had been remarkably consistent. Hoidsworth produced one of his best efforts at this stago. He earned applause for a splendid break of 03 and drew level with his opponent, at the 300 mark. Hoidsworth forged ahead with a break of -12. Displaying his best form, he maintained his advantage. Tho final sfores were:—L. F. W. Holdsworth, 500 (breaks of GO, 37, 27, 30, 03, 20, 28 and 37); T. Tierney, 350 (30, 70, 34, 34, 21, 20, 43 and 23). Tho first session of tho final will be held to-night between R. Carrick (holder) and Hoidsworth.
