FINE ON GAMING CHARGE
DETECTIVE VISITS HOUSE BET TAKEN OVER TELEPHONE [BY TELEGRAM —'OWN CORRESPONDENT] ROTORUA, Thursday A fino of £25 was imposed upon a young man, John McGill, described as a salesman, when ho pleaded guilty in tho Rotorua Court to-day before Mr. J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., to a charge of using a private residence in Rotorua as a common gaming house. Detective J. Thompson, of Hamilton, said that when he called at defendant's house he took a bet over the telephone for McGill on a horse named Tangle, racing at Christchurch. A search of tho promises later disclosed 20 double charts. McGill was a draper's assistant, who was travelling through the district frequently, and the prosecution had been brought in an effort to stop tho increasing practice of bookmakers' agents being sont into Public Works camps in tho Rotorua district. , , , r Mr. Roo. who appeared for McGul, said his client did noi an extensive drapery sales business and actually only took tho bet.s as an agent for another man. It was his first appearance before the Court.
