COAL SUPPLIES AMPLE

OPINION IN DUNEDIN NO CAUSE FOR APPREHENSION [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] DUXEDIN', Wednesday

Statements made recently in Wellington that there was a prospect of a serious coal shortage this winter could not be substantiated by inquiries in Dunedin. On the contrary, the manager of one big concern was definitely of the opinion that there was not the slightest likelihood of any such, shortage. There would be no difficulty in supplying both domestic and industrial needs, he said, and there was no cause for apprehension. There were more than sufficient collieries working in New Zealand to meet all demands. Occasionally a big industrial order came in—from the Railway Department, for instance —and collieries were then required to readjust their output. This might bring about a shortage in deliveries, but that shortage would only be slight and temporary.
