REPRESENTATIVE GAMES AUCKLAND TEAMS WIN HALFBACK IN GOOD FORM Two representative fixtures were played at Carlaw Park yesterday afternoon, when Auckland Rugby League teams opposed South Auckland and Taranaki. The local teams found the opposition very strong and it was not until the final stages that Auckland showed its superiority over the visitors. In the principal match the Auckland backs played Rood football, but found the Taranaki team greatly improved in the finer points of the game.' It was only superior speed and hotter understanding that gave Auckland its victory. The second half was particularly well contested. Auckland won by 27 points to 10. In tho curtain-raiser Auckland defeated South Auckland by 2(5 points to 12. A feature of the game was tho brilliant play of Mahima, at halfback, who served tho local rearguard on every opportunity. South Auckland outplayed Auckland on occasions, but thero was a lack of finish to promising movements SELFISH PLAY McCALLUM OUTSTANDING There was a lot of selfish play among the Auckland players in the Taranaki match and this had much to do with tho backs' failure to score after tho forwards had gained possession. Three times during the game the Auckland backs started movements and both Tittleton and Kay held on when Midgley could have scored. McCalluin, on tho wing, was easily the best back on the ground and scored nice tries. Itiley, on tho other wing, dropped a few passes. Behind the scrum, Powell played a sound game, but lacked variety. Both Mitchell and Broderick played, splendid football and look certain of inclusion in any representative team as secondrow forwards. Donald also played a good game. Among the Taranaki toam Christcnsen, at centre tnreequarter, played a good game, as did both the wings, Sykcs and Walker. Robinson was good behind the scrum. Early in the frame the Taranaki forwards rushed play to Auckland territory, but Kay and McCallum cnrriod it back to half-way. The Auckland backs had pleiity of opportunities, but the passing was uncertain. From a passing bout Kay cut in instead of passing to Riley, who bad a clear run in. GOOD SHOWING SOUTH AUCKLAND TEAM Although defeated South Auckland put up a good performance against Auckland and the scores were no indication of the run of the play. Several of the South Auckland backs, notably Tukere, Jackson and Shaw, played good football. Four penalty shots at goal by Powell, South Auckland, in the first few minutes, were unsuccessful. South Auckland gained possession from the scrums, but its passing was erratic. MATCHES AT OTAHUHU AUCKLAND LEAGUE'S COMPLAINT A complaint was received at last evening's meeting of the Auckland Rugby League that undue influence was being brought to bear in the matter of schoolchildren attending football matches at Otahuhu. iho chairman, Mr. G. Grey Campbell, read a printed circular issued to schoolchildren advertising the Rugby Union matches for next Saturday at Stiirges Park. Several delegates asked that the matter should ho referred to the Education Department. On the suggestion of the chairman it was decided to approach the local school committee on the matter. .
