RUGBY FOOTBALL

REPRESENTATIVE MATCH FIXTURE AT EDEN PARK AUCKLAND B DEFEATS THAMES The Auckland B representative Rugby fifteen overwhelmed a Thames combination in the curtain-raiser to the Auckland-Waikato fixture at Eden Park yesterday by 41 points to 14. Although tho score suggests a runaway victory,. tho match was quite an attractive 'exhibition of fast and carefree football throughout. The majority of the Auckland team's scores were the results of spectacular raids, back and forward, while the young Thames team was also responsible for several bright rushes. The Auckland fifteen was too fast, heavy and experienced in all departments, but it was in tho forwards that it was outstandingly superior. The opposition certainly was not very strong, but several of the Auckland packmen were among the outstanding players on the field. T. Pearce, the big Manuka"u forward, repeatedly earned applause with his brilliant, efforts. He burst through tho Thames defence almost at will and it usually took two or three defenders to bring him down. Pearce scored two tries and was responsible for several others. It is difficult to understand how he was omitted from tho aide to play Waikato. First-class Forward Display 'Another first-class all-round forward display was that given by Smith. He showed the speed and ability of a back, plenty of football brains and was on the ball throughout. After his two fine exhibitions for the Auckland B teams this season Smith should bo a strong candidate for a place in the provincial pack to meet the Springboks. Other forwards to play prominently wero Bunting, Bailey and Large, while Roddick, Mcßeath and Wiklund worked hard in the tight. The Auckland backs performed well. McKinley retired injured early in tho first spell, while Moyle did not take his place at halfback' owing to an indisposition. He was replaced by Arkle. The two outstanding backs were Pearson, at centre-three-quarter, who scored three spectacular tries in the second spell, and Prentice, the promising young Grafton centre, who played at second five-eighths yesterday. Pearson played brilliantly. Prentice confirmed the - opinion that he is a future Auckland representative back. Speed off the mark, tricky running and safe handling were featured of a fine display. Brady, a senior B grade player, made a number of strong dashes at first five-eighths In a useful game. His tackling was sound. Arkle was in sound form behind the scrum, while Hewitt ?ind Schubert were dashing wing-threequarters. Brigbouse was not a success at' fullback, being too often caught in possession, while his line-kicking was pdor. Promising Thames Players The Thames team included a number of ?ery promising players who were quite a match for, their opposing numbers. Tho most impressive backs were Hamilton, at fiveeighths, and Davis, the centre-threequarter. These two players showed' speed and ability and combined on ; a number of occasions • with fast penetrating rushes, which severely tested the Auckland defence. Cleave showed himself a capable halfback until his retirement at the interval. G. Solomon, a brother of the two All Blacks, showed flashes of fine form. He played at halfback in the second spell and did not receive many chances to shine on attack. The outstanding forwards were Story, the captain, who played a really fine game, and Poland, who scored an excellent try and also made the opening for another. Russek and Hartnett also showed up well. For Auckland, Pearson (3), Prentice (2), Pearce (2), Arkle, Brady, Wiklund and Schubert scored tries, "Wiklund and Roddick contorted two each. For Thames, Russek," Davis and Poland scored tries. Ball converted one anfi Poland kicked a penalty goal _ Mr. J. G. Gasparich was referee. A RUNAWAY VICTORY HAWKE'S BAY V. WAIRARAPA [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] NAPIER, Wednesday Before an attendance of 4000, Hawke's Bay repeated the success of Coronation Day toy defeating Wairarapa by 47 to 5. The Bay backs proved too speedy, and their combination with the forwards often left tho visitors badly out of position. With the wind Hawke's Bay put on 26 points in the first half. Although Wairarapa held tho homo team for a period following 'the change-over, Hawke's Bay again took command. Robins and Apsey played splendidly, while "White, Maori All Black, although scoring two tries, was often too crowded to make his de- . vastating run. Johnson, Reid, Jackson and Bowman were the best of the forwards. Hume, Hutton and O'Callaghan played well without being brilliant, while Hood, Varcoe and "Walker were the best toilers for the losers. For Hawke's Bay tries were scored by Johnson (four). White (two), Herbert, Robins, Bradley and Wilson, and Bradley converted six and Johnson one and a penalty. Varcoe scored for Wairarapa, Brunton converting. HAWKE'S BAY JUNIORS WIN [by telegraph —PRESS ASSOCIATION] , ' MASTERTON, Wednes&ay In a junioi Rugby match at Masterton to-day Hawke's Bay beat Wairarapa by 9 to 6 in a keenly-contested game. MATCH. AT TE AWAMUTU WAIPA DEFEATS MATAMATA [from our own correspondent] TE AWAMUTU, Wednesday In a representative Rugby football match played to-day, Waipa defeated Matamata by 17 points to 6. Conditions were perfect and a large crowd witnessed a fine display. Both teams were weakened by the absence of players in the Waikato team at Auckland. Superior strength in the forwards in all department)] except hooking won the game for Waipa, there being little difference between the opposing backs. For Waipa,' Wilson (2), Hanna, Naahoe and Turney scored. Bell converted one. For Matamata Hawken kicked a'penalty goal and Germann scored Kovers defeated Territorials by 5 to 3 in a bright curtain-raiser. Third grade matches resulted: —Te Awamutu. 14. Pirongia, 0: Old Boys, 30, >High School, 3. ' » REFEREES' CERTIFICATE NORTH AUCKLAND POLICY [FROM .OUR OWN correspondent] WHANG-AREI, Wednesday The most representative gathering of Rugby refereeß associated with the North Auckland Referees' Association for the past 15 years wag held in Whangare:!, Mr. W. H. ClifTe, of Dargavillo, presiding. Every sub-associa-tion in the territory was represented. Applications were received from 10 candidates for examination for a North Auckland referee certificate: The four members of tho examination board were in attendance, and a definite .policy and standard of examination were decided upon so as to safeguard the proper standing and prestige of a North Auckland referee certificate. It was decided to endeavour to arrange for the interchange of referees for the control of inter-club games. As the main oolicy of tho association is to obtain uniformity in.' the interpretation of rules it was considered that the regular interchange of referees will go a long way toward achieving this result, It was also decided to send one or more senior referees to referees' meetings to deliver lectures and give advice. Mr. L. G. Miller was appointed permanent chairman, for the year, to officiate in the event of the president, who resides in Dargaville, - being absent. HAMILTON V. PONSONBY ' [from- OCR OWN correspondent] HAMILTON, Wednesday A weakened Ponsonby team from Auckland w-as soundly beaten by tho Hamilton representative team at Rugby Park to-day by 28 points to 0. The Hamilton players wero superior in every phase of the game. It was apparent that, tho Ponsonby team hud not plaved together very much and frequent changes made during the game did not improve their combination. A sotfhd display in tho Hamilton fiveeighths line .was given by Bythall, a former Marlborough representative. His handling whs good and -his defence reliable. Broad gave excellent service from the scrum. The Hamilton forwards had the upper hand in the loose work and did excellent work in smoth-

ering tho Ponsonby inside backs. Pardington worked well and Holloway and Belcher showed up frequently. Ponsonby's best player was probably Knight, in tho forwards, a thorough toiler in tlie looso and in tho set scrums. Johnson was conspicuous for his tireless following up and he did valuable spoiling work. The backs suffered from the attention of tho Hamilton breakaway forwards. Mr. S. Heather was referee. , Lower grade matches played as curtainraisers resulted as follows: —Taupiri Junior B. 8, Hamilton third grade, 6; town juniors, 8, country juniors, 7. PUKEKOHE BEATS KAIPARA [from our own correspondent] PUKEKOHE, Wednesday Tho Kajpara Rugby representatives visited Pukekohe io-day and woro defeated by 36 points to 3 by the Pukekohe representatives. The game, played on Bledisloo Park before about 330 spectators, was fairly fast and open. Tho home team's rear division outmatched tho visitors' back lino. Thoro was littlo to choose between the two sets of forwards. Tho Pukekohe backs penetrated the Kaipara defence tirno and again in quick succession, and the score at half-time was 23 to 0. Tries were scored for Pukekohe b.v Hewitt (4), Standon, Loughlin, Hogan, Costollo and Wilkinson. Loughlin converted two and Hewitt ono. Loughlin kicked a penalty goal.
