met strong opposition from the Marist set, which was fuperior in the loose and won the ball from most of the scrums. A featuro of the game was the excellent combination H)f tho Marist inside backs, Crocker, Murdock and McLaren. Ihe lesv named was outstanding on attack and did much useful work on defence. It was not, however, until Haslani replaced Donovan, who retired injured, that Marist rose to the occasion and hopelessly outclassed the I onsonby backs. , , Easily the best try of tho mutch came from good work by Anderson and Bakalich. and four backs handled perfectly before MoGrcal scored. There was not much vim in the play of the Ponsonby forwards. Ihe pack did not follow up as well as usual, and the tackling was generally weak. Lato in the second half, McKinley, Ponsonby, was ordered off for questioning the referee s decision. Thero were several stoppages in the second half, and at one stage four players were on the sideline with injuries. For Marist, Glover played a good game at fullback, and saved many tries by splendid tackling. Halsey played a fine game on the wing and is an acquisition to Marist. Anderson was outstanding among tho forwards, while McGreal, Finlayson and O Kane were also prominent. Black was easily the best of the Ponsonby backs and did a lot of useful work at halfback. Kay got few opportunities at centre, but the wings, Mnrse and McKinley. played good games. Morgan, Keane and Middleton were the pick of the forwards. For Marist, Murdock, McGreal, Halsey and Crocker scored tries. Anderson converted all four tries. For Ponsonby, Kay scored and Stockley converted. Mr. P Rogers was referee.
