CITY UNLUCKY

DRAWN GAME PLAYED City was a little unlucky in not taking the points in a well-contested game with Manukau. With the score 13—all, the City backs swept over the opposition in the final stages, and from excellent team work a try was thrown away when Hapi, who had the opposition " beaten, kicked and the ball was forced down. City was first to score f'om a good movement ' initiated by Wiberg at fullback. Soon aiterwarda. Grimble cleverly beat the opposition and equalised. The Manukau backs could not nettle down. The best movement of the game came from Manukau, when Murton scored just before half-time. Mahima started a passing bout and Whye. Gault, Brimblo and Broderick handled splendidly. Excellent backing up was .1 teiiiore of the movement. Play in tho second tialf was exciting and luck was against City on several occasions.' A few minutes before the bell, McLaughlin made a nice run and. in attempting to improve a scoring position, slipped and a try was lost. In the first half Wiberg, usually a good place kick, missed a goal almost in front or the posts. However, Manu- ] kau has only to secure the 6orvices of a good hooker to be a dangerous team on attack. The City forwards put up a good showing and Wehrner, the ex-South Island represen- * tative, did good work as hooker. Donald, Spiro and Johnson "were prominent in the loose. Among the backs, Hutchisoh played a fine game at halfback and scored a brilliaht try.; His passing from the scrum was well directed and he showed 6peed on attack. Wiberg played a faultless game at fullback. McLaughlin showed a Jot of speed and combined well with Hapi and Tawhai, both of whom played good football. Broderick, at centre, was outstanding for Manukau, and always dangerous on attack. Hemi played well at fullback, although he was not so confident as usual. Mahima was a tower of strength behind the pack and Brimble ,w as prominent on attack. Gault, Watene and Painter were the best of the forwards. For Manukau tries were scored by Brimble, Rickit and Broderick. Hemi kicked a penalty iroal and Watene converted one try. For City McLaughlin scored two tries and Hutchison one. Wiberg kicked a penally goal and converted one try. Mr O Chalmers was referee.
