RICHMOND PRESSED
MATCH AT MORNINGSIDE In a well-contested game at Fowlds Park, Morningside, Newton pressed Richmond, which fained the advantage only late in the seqond alf. The ground was heavy in places and against good football. Although Richmond scored first, Newton had much the better of the early stages and led at half-time. The Newton backs played good football and the forwards gave splendid support in the loose. It was only tho good work of the forwards that placed Richmond in the lead. Soon after the kick-off, Mitchell made a determined run down the line and, from a splendid passing bout,. \Vilkie raced over at the corner. Newton scored two good tries a few minutes later and should have had a good load but for poor goal-kicking. Better combination by Richmond was a feature of the second half, but Newton was by no means out of the picture. On one occasion, Dempsey. started a passing bout, in which four players participated, and Quirke narrowly missed a try. The game improved toward the end of the second half and the Richmond backs were often dangerous. Newton, however, showed improved form and it will occasion no surprise to see it win matches against teams higher in the championship. For Richmond Mincham and W. Tittleton were outstanding. Their ability to penetrate really gave Richmond a win. Furnell played a sou-nd game at fallback, although a little weak in kicking. Powell did a'lot of useful work behind the scrum. Mitchell, Telford and Tetley were the best of tho forwards and Satlierley hooked well. Of the Newton backs Young and Sissons played good football and compared favourably with the opposition. Dempsey was in his best form at fullback, and started many geod movements. The Brimble Brothers excelled on attack. Quirke, Procter and Beattie played well among the forwards. For Richmond tries were scored by Wilkie (2), G. Tittleton and Hadley. G. Tittleton kicked a penalty goal. For Newton Sissons. W. Brimble and Crook scored tries. Mr. F. Thompson was referee.
