TRAGIC TARANAKI FIRE WATCHERS UNABLE TO HELP [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] NEW PLYMOUTH, Sunday An aged man, Mr. James Wilson, was burned to death in his hut at Matau, 2(5 miles from Stratford, to-day. A young man saw the hut on lire and sought assistance, but nothing could be done to quell tlie outbreak and save Mr. Wilson, as the whole building was a mass of flames. When the fire died down the would-be helpers saw what they thought to lie human remains. The police later searched the debris and found Mr. Wilson's.charred body. The cause of the lire is not known. Mr. Wilson was in a feeble condition and would have had difficulty in escaping.
