JED FOREST TRIUMPHS

FIORD ANNEXES HANDICAP TOP RANK TAKES HIGH-WEIGHT [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] CHBISTCHURCH, Saturday

Jed Forest had a decisive win in the Novice Stakes. He was one of the first to show out and led to the home turn from Short Circuit. Jed Forest had a slight advantage from Short Circuit entering the straight, with Aggravate hanay. Drawing away fn the run home Jed Forest went on to win with something in hand from Aggravate, who gave the leaders a big break in the early stages through meeting trouble shortly after the start. Cocksure finished well to deprive Coming Star of third in the last few strides. Short Circuit headed the remainder. Great Star was preferred to Top Hank in the Brackenfield High-weight Handicap, but after acting as pilot for the first three furlongs he gave way to Top Rank, who led into the straight from Great Star, Streamline and Giggleswick. Streamline and Giggleswick challenged, but Top Rank was never in danger, and won easily. Giggleswick finished strongly to cut Streamline out of second on the post. Favouritism Justified Jovial justified her favouritism for the Teviotdale Trot by recording a comfortable victory. She was always one of the leading division and, taking charge from the pacemaker, Winning Post, at the home turn led into the straight from Big Nelson and Colonel Axworthy. Jovial carried on to win without pressure, while in a close finish for second Big Nelson got in the deciding stride to beat Colonel Axworthy. Chieftainess was next.

Rebel Chief outclassed his live opponents in the Glasnevin Handicap. Great Star took up his customary roll of pacemaker and led early from Rebel Chief, Capital and Wino. Great Star was a neck in front of Top Rank entering the straight, with Wino and Rebel Chief in close attendance. Great Star was done with a furlong from home, and Rebel Chief gradually worked his way to the front to win without being seriously ridden. Wino put in a telling effort nearing the post and just failed to overhaul Top Rank. Great Star was again a poor fourth. Starky Memorial Contest

The G. B. Starky Memorial Hand*cap provided a close finish. Lochain shot out shortly after the start and led along the back from Forum, Maroha, Grampian, Rousseau, Recollection and Dictate. There was no change until approaching the straight, where Lochain retired and Rousseau took charge from Forum, with Dropped Catch, Maroha and Recollection handy. Rousseau appeared to be winning comfortably until Recollection swooped down on him m the last 50 yards and beat him by a neck. Forum was a length away, a neck in front of Dropped Catch, w "° put in a belated run, and would ha\e been third in another stride. Dictate, who was in the rear of the field tor three-quarters of the journey, finished fast to get fifth, with Jolly Beggar Silver Slipper was sent out a firm favourite for the Seadown Handicap, but after giving trouble at the start she bumped into Owlsgleam when the topes were released and whipped round, ruining any chance she had. Wine Card was first to. show out, but was soon joined by Owlsgleam. nine Card had a slight advantage entering the straight, and with half a furlong to go looked likely to hold her place, but Owlsgleam wore her down and gained victory in the last stride. Heloise was a good third, with Potent, who was always well up. tourth, in front of Day Dress. Fiord' was sent out a good favourite for the Amberley Handicap and he fulfilled expectations by recording a narrow but impressive win. Full Ihrottle was' the earlv leader from Pontv, Golden Dart and Fiord. The last-named ■ drew to the front three furlongs from home and was then joined by Golden Dart The pair fought out an interesting struggle from that stage, Fiord proving the better stayer. Silver Sight caxue from a rear position to gain third, a length in frPnt of J' till Throttle, who beat Ponty by a head. Investors again fared well in summing up the big field for the Kowhai Trot, which provided an exciting finish The first choice, Thornworthv, went to the front early and led to the straight entrance, where Wee J at and Stylish Boy appeared to head him. However, Woe Pat and Stylish Boy ran out wide, and Thornworthv. remaining on the rails was able to get on terms again a few yards from the post. Continuing his run. Thornworthv won narrowlv from Stvlish Lady, who just headed' Wee Pat" Green Tanger was fourth and Chieftainess fifth.
