NOTES ON RUNNING

VICTORY FOR GLOSTER BRONTE PERFORMS SOLIDLY KEWPIE'S KING TAKES SPRINT Gloster, who has recorded many placed efforts on country courses, improved to win the Introductory Handicap from Bronze Queen and the very little fancied Tangaroa. The each-way favourite Guide Peter was first away from No. 1 position, but broke early, and a little later had his chance extinguished by a horse breaking and checking him badly. Scrap Iron and Worthy Song made play to the home turn, with Gloster, Kewpie's Bingen, Eyre and Hori Bingen handy. Gloster came away inside the distance to win from the fast-finishing Bronze Queen. The winner returned over a score. Tangaroa, who finished well for third, paid close on a century for a place. Hori Bingen was fourth, and Kia Kaha finished very fast on the outside to be next, just ahead of Grattan Girl. Kewpie's Bingen ran a creditable race and Eyre was not disgraced. Lady Bunker Improves Lady Bunker improved on her second at Thames by easily winning the Eureka Handicap. She was patiently driven by J. T. Paul and, after trailing Sophy Bingen and Grand Triumph in turn for a mile, she took charge to score without being troubled. The winner is a full-sister to Bessie Parrish. Grand Triumph, having his first race for W. J. Evnon, went very fast in patches and paid double figures for a place, as did the third horse, Bronte, who trotted pleasingly. Native Princess, who was fourth, also went solidly. The win favourite Qnerida made several lapses, while Worthy Member broke up early and was never dangerous. Corona Bell, who was having her first race this season, made a creditable showing and should improve. Red Eagle trotted soundly for a mile and a-quarter", but failed to stay on. Always handily placed, Ironside easily won the Coronation Cup after being well handled by J. G. Robertson. Although he had not won for 12 months, Ironside was favourite on the win machine and second fancy in the placq betting. Great Jewel lost a lot of ground <it the start, and Ironside was the early leader. Before going a mile Star Pronto had charge from Ironside, and they turned for home together. Star Pronto then broke and Ironside came on to win easily from Our McKinney, with Glorietta, who was always in the picture, third. Twelve lengths back came Winawry. When Star Pronto broke he went back on Kewpie's King, who came down and stopped Kenworthy, the latter getting a foot through the wheel of Kewpie's King's sulky. A Fine Finish In a desperate finish, F. J. Smith succeeded iu getting Musketeer home ahead of Great Chum in the Tama here Handicap. Derby Lu went to the front early, but with a round to go gave way" to Transfer. At the homo turn Transfer, Derby Lu, Compass, Great Chum and Musketeer were bunched, and Musketeer, who was driven a quiet race, finished very gamely to beat Great Chum, who also went very well. Compass finished on better than Transfer for third, with Royal Jewel, Baron Grand and Derby Lu following. The each-way favourite Handicapper was never dangerous. Franz Derby trotted well, but could not finish with the pacers. Baron Grand flattered his supporters when he made a sharp run round the field at the turn, but he could not sustain the effort.

After his good placed effort in the Eureka Handicap, Bronte was made an each-way favourite for the Autumn Handicap and, carefully handled by C. R. Wood, he won nicely. Waskasu went away with a good lead, and in spite of two lapses was still in charge half a mile from home, where she broke again and surrendered the lead to Bronte, who went on to win well. Waskasu fought on solidly to gain second. Elissa, after a bad beginning, trotted solidly for third. Gala Day went solidly to get fourth. The second fancy, Vain Lad, failed to make any showing. Reception looked likely to be in the money crossing the top, but tired. Stalky was in the firing line for over a mile and a-half but a had break put him out of it. Defeat of Sandusky

Although he made a game effort to reach Kewpie's Crest in the final stages of the Itukuhia Handicap the two-vear-old Sandusky failed by half a length. Kewpie's Crest was splendidly driven by W. C. Willetts, wlm took him into a good position early. Gloster assumed command at the end of half a mile and led into the straight from Sir Frank, Roman Chief, Kewpie's Crest, Charteris Bay and Sandusky Kewpie's Crest took charge at the distance and stalled off a strong challenge from Sandusky. Sir Frank just beat Charteris • Bay for third. Hot Point, who was checked early, was next, putting in good work in the run home. Claudelands, after a good beginning, broke badly and, although h#> displayed speed later, was not happy in the soft ground. The each-way favourite King's Play was in front a furlong from home in the Kaipaki Handicap but left his feet and was beaten by Kewpie s King. Silk Cord and Kewpie's King were in front to the mile, where the former retired. Kewpie's King, King's Play and Star Pronto were in close order entering the straight and King's Play then headed Kewpie's King, who fought 011 solidly to gain the verdict when King's Play broke. Ironside, who was penalised 2-1 yards, was right up third and Our McKinne.v was fourth. Penalised 12 yards, Kewpie's Crest won the Visitors' Handicap at double figures from the consistent Croat Chum. The race was run in semidarkness. Nerihana. Bonny Pointer and Hearsay made the running to the home turn. Kewpie's Crest and Great Churn then came through and they fought out a fine finish. The trotter Franz Derby ran a splendid race for third, returning a substantial place dividend. She was always bandy and, although Hearsay, Bonn.v Pointer, Nerihana and Derby Lu were ahead of her at the turn, she outstayed them in the run home. Hearsay had every chance but faded into fourth.
